UAE's Falcon 2 AI Sets New Standards, Outperforms Meta's Llama 3

The Technology Innovation Institute (TII) has once again made headlines with the launch of Falcon 2, the latest addition to its AI repertoire under the umbrella of Abu Dhabi's Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC). Falcon 2 introduces two versions to the tech world: Falcon 2 11B, an advancement in language model technology, and Falcon 2 11B VLM, which stands out for its vision-to-language capabilities. This development marks a significant leap in artificial intelligence, particularly with the Falcon 2 11B VLM being recognized for its unique ability to convert images into text, a feature not found in other leading models in the market.

Falcon 2's performance has been rigorously tested and has shown to surpass that of Meta's Llama 3 and is on par with Google's Gemma 7B, as per evaluations by Hugging Face. This achievement positions TII's offerings amongst the most powerful open-source large language models (LLMs) worldwide. The models are designed to be multilingual, covering languages such as English, French, Spanish, German, and Portuguese, which broadens their application in various global contexts. Furthermore, the open-source nature of Falcon 2 models empowers developers by providing unrestricted access to these advanced AI tools.

Falcon 2 AI Outshines Llama 3

Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary General of ATRC, emphasized the institute's dedication to the open-source movement and the broader aim of making cutting-edge AI models accessible for developers and organizations prioritizing privacy. Dr. Hakim Hacid, Executive Director and Acting Chief Researcher of the AI Cross-Center Unit at TII, highlighted the evolving landscape of AI, where the demand for smaller, more efficient models is growing. These models not only require less computing power but also align with sustainability goals and can be seamlessly integrated into existing infrastructure.

The Falcon 2 11B models' proficiency in handling multiple languages and their capability to interpret and describe images opens up a plethora of possibilities across various sectors. Industries such as healthcare, finance, e-commerce, education, and legal can benefit from applications ranging from document management and digital archiving to aiding individuals with visual impairments. Moreover, the models' efficiency on a single GPU promotes scalability and ease of integration into smaller devices.

Looking ahead, TII plans to integrate the 'Mixture of Experts' (MoE) machine learning capability into Falcon 2 models, aiming to enhance their performance further. This method combines smaller networks, each specializing in different areas, to produce more sophisticated and tailored responses. This innovative approach is expected to not only improve the accuracy of AI models but also their decision-making speed, thus leading to the development of smarter and more efficient AI systems.

Falcon 2 11B is licensed under the TII Falcon License 2.0, a software license based on Apache 2.0, which includes an acceptable use policy to encourage responsible AI usage.
