UAE Collaborates With Oman In Pioneering Environmental Sustainability Conference

Abdulla Balalaa, the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability Affairs, recently made a significant appearance at the Oman Conference for Environmental Sustainability. This event, taking place from 26th to 28th February, is under the esteemed patronage of Sayyid Asa’ad in Tarik Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and Personal Representative of His Majesty the Sultan. The conference is a collaborative effort between the Environment Authority of Oman and the UN Environment Program (UNEP), alongside various Omani entities and ministries.

During his keynote speech to representatives from 25 states, Balalaa highlighted the UAE's pivotal role in climate action, particularly through its achievements at the Conference of the Parties to UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) held in Expo City Dubai. He pointed out the directives by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to extend the "Year of Sustainability" into 2024, reinforcing the UAE’s dedication to global climate initiatives.

UAE and Oman Lead in Sustainability

Balalaa emphasized the significance of the 'UAE Consensus' reached at COP28, which introduces new standards for combating climate change. This consensus aims to keep global warming within 1.5 °C by reducing emissions, addressing financing and adaptation gaps, and overhauling the global financial system. He proudly mentioned that COP28 marked a historic moment with over US$ 85 billion mobilized for climate action, a landmark agreement on Loss and Damage, and significant progress on energy transition. This conference was also notable for its success in fostering multilateralism, with 198 countries endorsing a unified approach to enhance climate action.

Furthermore, Balalaa shed light on the UAE's initiatives during the World Government Summit (WGS) in February 2024. The UAE launched the COP Presidency Troika in partnership with Azerbaijan and Brazil, future hosts of COP29 and COP30 respectively. This initiative underscores the commitment of these nations to drive collective climate action and maintain focus on limiting global warming to 1.5 °C. He expressed gratitude towards the Sultanate of Oman for hosting such an impactful conference and highlighted the potential for future strategic cooperation in sustainability efforts.

The conference also featured an environment exhibition showcasing innovative tools, solutions, and technologies across various environmental sectors. With 160 research papers from 25 countries, the event provided a comprehensive platform for discussing environmental, research, and scientific aspects related to carbon neutrality.

This gathering in Oman not only underscores the region's commitment to environmental sustainability but also sets a precedent for future international cooperation in tackling climate change. The efforts of nations like the UAE in spearheading initiatives such as COP28 and extending sustainability goals into 2024 demonstrate a proactive approach to global climate challenges.
