Bayanat And Yahsat Launch UAE's First SAR Satellite For Earth Observation
Bayanat and Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat) have announced the successful launch of the UAE's first synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite. This marks a significant milestone in the country's Earth observation space programme.
The SAR satellite, launched in partnership with ICEYE, was sent into low Earth orbit (LEO) aboard the SpaceX Transporter 11 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA. Communication with the satellite has been confirmed, and initial operations have commenced.

This new satellite aims to improve Earth observation capabilities by providing continuous, high-resolution monitoring solutions. Unlike traditional imaging satellites, SAR satellites can capture images day and night, regardless of weather conditions or sunlight reflection.
ICEYE's radar antenna offers extensive geographic coverage and high-resolution images of smaller areas, delivering greater value to customers compared to other SAR services. The active sensor system illuminates the Earth's surface and measures the reflected signal to produce detailed images.
The collaboration between Bayanat and Yahsat underscores their commitment to advancing the UAE's space sector. This initiative supports national interests by driving innovation and enhancing local talent development in satellite data acquisition and processing.
"The launch of our first satellite is a significant achievement for our joint efforts and for the future of the region. We at Bayanat are proud of this achievement as a crucial step that will shape our future within Space42," said Hassan Al Hosani, Managing Director of Bayanat.
Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Yahsat Group, highlighted the importance of this launch: "The successful launch of SAR is a testament to the synergies between Yahsat and Data as we move forward with the upcoming Space42 merger." He added that over the next three years, they plan to expand their satellite operations across multiple orbits, including geostationary and low Earth orbit satellites.
This expansion will enhance Yahsat's expertise in satellite manufacturing within the country and solidify its position as a leader in global space technology. The constellation of SAR satellites will provide near real-time, high-resolution images across the Middle East and beyond.
Disaster Management and Smart Mobility
The strategic initiative enhances Bayanat's ability to offer accurate geospatial information critical for disaster management, maritime surveillance, and smart mobility applications. This collaboration also aligns with Yahsat's commitment to developing sovereign satellite data capabilities as part of its National Space Strategy 2030.
The Earth Observation Space Program was established in 2023 to build national capabilities in satellite remote sensing. By leveraging Yahsat's operational capabilities and data solutions from satellites, this program aims to provide comprehensive SAR applications across various sectors.
This successful launch represents another achievement in Bayanat's ongoing partnership with Yahsat and ICEYE. It reflects the progressive vision of UAE leadership towards achieving its ambitious space strategy goals.
