UAE Issues High-Risk Alert For Google Chrome Users: Immediate Update Recommended

In a crucial development for digital security, the UAE Cyber Security Council has alerted users about significant vulnerabilities in the desktop version of Google Chrome, the world's most utilized internet browser. On February 22, the council underscored the importance of upgrading to the latest Chrome version to prevent potential breaches, information leaks, or other malicious activities.

The security advisory from the council highlighted 'multiple vulnerabilities in the Chrome browser.' These security gaps could allow attackers to execute code remotely on affected systems, access sensitive data, or sidestep security measures. This issue impacts Google Chrome versions 122.0.6261.57 or earlier across Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.

Google has responded to these threats by releasing a new version of Chrome that addresses these vulnerabilities. The latest update encompasses 12 security fixes. Among these, two have been classified as high severity, five as medium severity, and one as low severity, thereby marking a significant step towards enhancing user safety and data protection.

Guide to Updating Chrome

Updating Google Chrome is a straightforward process, usually occurring in the background when the browser is closed and reopened. However, users who have not closed their browser for extended periods might miss these automatic updates. To manually update Chrome, users should:

  • Open Chrome on their computer.
  • Click on More (three vertical dots) at the top right corner.
  • Under More, look for options indicating a pending update: “Relaunch to update,” “Finish update,” or “New Chrome available.”
  • To initiate the update, click on More again, then navigate to Help followed by About Google Chrome.
  • If available, click on Update Google Chrome. Note: If this button isn’t visible, the user already has the latest version.
  • Finally, click relaunch to complete the process.

Upon restarting, Chrome will restore all previously opened tabs and windows automatically, excluding those in Incognito mode. Users who opt not to restart immediately can select 'Not now,' with the update taking effect the next time Chrome is launched.

This proactive advisory from the UAE Cyber Security Council serves as a reminder of the ever-present threats in the digital environment and the continuous need for vigilance and regular updates to safeguard personal data and enhance online security.
