Paving Way For Comfort: Recycled Tires Used In New Heat-Resistant Roads For Hajj Pilgrims In Saudi Arabia

In preparation for the Hajj starting on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 Saudi Arabia has taken significant steps to enhance the journey for millions of pilgrims. A notable advancement is the introduction of an expanded pedestrian walkway. This path is not only climate-controlled but also designed with accessibility in mind, catering particularly to those with disabilities. The effort underscores a broader commitment to improving the welfare of pilgrims through innovative infrastructure.

The project received praise for its environmentally friendly approach, particularly its use of recycled materials. The Roads General Authority highlighted a substantial 82% increase in the initiative's scope since its inception in 2023. Specifically, over 84,000 square metres of roads in Arafat now feature surfaces that reflect more sunlight and significantly reduce heat. This method not only cools the environment but also contributes to a more pleasant experience for pilgrims, who often face extreme summer heat.

One of the project's groundbreaking aspects is the conversion of over 23 million discarded car tyres annually into rubberised asphalt. This material is used to pave the roads, effectively reducing environmental hazards. By recycling these tyres, which would otherwise contribute to landfill issues and emit harmful substances, the initiative showcases a practical approach to sustainability within the context of a major religious event.

The implementation of this recycled asphalt has led to a 33% increase in the coverage of flexible rubber surfaces, now extending over 16,000 square metres. The newly added section, running from Namira Mosque to Arafat Train Station, provides a softer surface that benefits all pilgrims, especially the elderly, by offering improved comfort and safety.

Further enhancing the pilgrim's experience, the walkway features a green corridor equipped with tree planting, air-cooling mist systems, and water fountains. These additions, achieved through partnerships with local charities, aim to improve air quality and offer relief from the heat. This initiative reflects a comprehensive approach to addressing the physical and environmental challenges of the Hajj.

Completing the suite of improvements is a 4,000-metre pedestrian path leading to Mount Arafat. This path employs the same cooling and low-vibration paving technology, emphasizing inclusivity and support for pilgrims with disabilities and their companions. Through these multifaceted efforts, Saudi Arabia demonstrates its dedication to creating a safer, more sustainable, and accessible Hajj experience.
