Thuraya Launches Thuraya-4 Satellite In South Africa To Boost Connectivity For Key Industries

Thuraya, a subsidiary of Space42 (ADX: SPACE42), has launched its latest mobile communications satellite, Thuraya-4, in South Africa. This expansion signifies Thuraya's full operational presence in the country, enhancing satellite connectivity in one of Africa's rapidly growing digital markets.

The introduction of Thuraya-4 enhances national coverage and bolsters essential communication sectors. It aligns with South Africa's Vision 2030 digital inclusion goals, improving efficiency for industry and government while complementing investments in space and telecommunications infrastructure.

Thuraya Expands with Thuraya-4 in South Africa

Thuraya-4 plays a crucial role in supporting South Africa's connectivity-dependent industries such as energy, mining, maritime, civil government, and humanitarian operations. By extending communication networks to remote areas, it boosts productivity and safety in sectors vital to the economy.

Sulaiman Al Ali, Chief Commercial Officer at Space42, stated: "Thuraya has delivered mobile satellite services across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia for over 20 years, supporting customers where coverage and continuity are essential. South Africa's focus on digital inclusion and infrastructure resilience makes it an important addition to that journey. As a UAE-based company, we see strong alignment in how both countries view connectivity as a driver of economic resilience. Through Thuraya-4, we are proud to support that shared ambition."

Thuraya-4 offers mobility and reliability beyond traditional satcom systems. Unlike networks designed for fixed access, it supports mission-critical communications where reach and security are vital. Its advanced L-band payload dynamically allocates bandwidth and power while ensuring seamless interoperability with terrestrial networks.

This satellite is engineered to provide uninterrupted service even in adverse weather or isolated regions. Its combination of mobility and endurance ensures continuous communication for sectors reliant on constant connectivity.

Thuraya's expansion into South Africa is part of Space42's strategy to enhance digital access across Africa. In Zimbabwe, Space42 has connected over 1,000 schools and 500 clinics with plans to reach more institutions serving 1.9 million students.

In Rwanda, its subsidiary Mira Aerospace conducted the first 5G video call from a High-Altitude Platform Station. This demonstrated how airborne systems can extend broadband where satellites cannot reach. In South Africa, Yahclick provides reliable broadband access through Space42.

Through the Map Africa Initiative with Microsoft and Esri, Space42 is developing a comprehensive base map using satellite imagery and AI analytics. This initiative aids infrastructure planning and climate-resilient development by partnering with regional institutions.

The collaboration between Thuraya and South African regulators ensures alignment with local connectivity goals. This partnership reflects shared ambitions for digital growth in the region.
