This Swiss Nursery Has Introduced A Robot Companion To Enhance Early Learning

In a Swiss nursery, a group of three-year-olds sit engrossed, not with traditional toys, but with Nao, a robot who has become an integral part of their learning experience. At 'La Nanosphere' creche, located on the campus of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Nao is more than just a technological novelty; he's an "interactive learning companion" introduced to help children adapt to a future where robots are a common aspect of daily life.

Since the New Year, Nao has greeted children with his child-like voice, introducing himself and expressing his excitement about spending time with them. This initiative is part of a broader vision by the Educalis group, which oversees a network of nurseries and primary schools in Lausanne, to familiarize children with technology from an early age.

Olivier Delamadeleine, director-general of Educalis, highlighted the importance of integrating robots into educational settings, given the likelihood of robots becoming commonplace in the future workplace. The presence of Nao at 'La Nanosphere' aims to make children comfortable and proficient in interacting with robots.

The interactions between the children and Nao are not just about technological fascination; they are educational too. Under the guidance of their teacher, Eve L'Eplattenier, children learn from Nao about various topics, including the benefits of eating broccoli. Nao, programmed by Gabriel Paffi, a master's student in robotics, also engages the children in problem-solving exercises, responding to their questions and commands with the aim of becoming an autonomous teaching aid.

Since its market debut in 2008, Nao has evolved considerably. The current model at 'La Nanosphere', belonging to its sixth generation, is part of the United Robotics Group's family, with over 15,000 units sold globally. The plan for Nao includes a prolonged stay at Educalis nurseries to continuously support and enhance children's learning experiences as his capabilities grow.

The response to Nao from both the children and their parents has been overwhelmingly positive. L'Eplattenier notes the children's eagerness and curiosity about what Nao will teach them next, highlighting the robot's role as both a companion and an informant within the group. Parents, too, have expressed their support for this innovative approach to learning, recognizing the benefits of exposing children to new technologies early on.
