Dubai To Test Smart Robot For Monitoring Soft Mobility To Minimise Two-Wheeler Violations
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Terminus Group, a leading provider in the realm of robotics and advanced technical systems, to start trial operation for an innovative smart robot designed for surveillance and the detection of violations related to soft mobility means in Dubai, with the operation set to commence in March 2024.
The MoU was signed during the fifth edition of the MENA Transport Congress and Exhibition 2024. The signatories included Ahmed Mahboub, Acting CEO of Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector, RTA, and Dr. Ling Shao, President of Terminus International and Chief Scientist of Terminus Group. This collaboration aims to initiate a trial operation of the smart robot in coordination with Dubai Police, beginning in the Jumeirah 3 beach area. The goal is to evaluate the impact and potential for future broader application.
RTA's initiative to introduce this smart robot aligns with its objectives to promote seamless and sustainable mobility, enhance the transportation network through smart solutions, and position Dubai as a leading smart city in the region. The initiative also supports the UAE's vision to become a global leader in artificial intelligence by 2031, by modernising surveillance methods and integrating AI techniques for real-time monitoring and violation detection.
The smart robot is designed to monitor the use of soft mobility means, such as bicycles and electric scooters, and to detect a range of violations. This includes monitoring large gatherings, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, and preventing the misuse of scooters. With the ability to identify violations with over 85% accuracy and deliver data within 5 seconds, the robot represents a significant advancement in surveillance technology. It is also equipped with safety features, ensuring it halts when it comes within 1.5 metres of any object or individual.
Dr. Ling Shao expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the shared goal of leveraging green and smart technologies to improve safety standards for transportation users. RTA's commitment to enhancing the use of soft mobility is evident in its efforts to integrate these modes of transport with public transport and key landmarks.
This initiative not only aims to enhance safety and compliance among users of soft mobility means but also showcases Dubai's continuous efforts to embrace innovative solutions that contribute to the city's status as a leader in smart city technologies.
