Dubai's RTA Commits AED 700 Million To Al Khail Road Enhancement

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has recently announced a significant investment in the infrastructure of Dubai, with a contract valued at AED700 million dedicated to the Al Khail Road Improvement Project. This ambitious initiative is set to enhance the flow of traffic along one of the city's key arteries, Al Khail Road, through the construction of bridges and road improvements across seven strategic locations.

The project encompasses the construction of bridges totaling 3,300 metres in length and road improvements extending over 6,820 metres. These enhancements are strategically placed across seven locations including Zabeel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadeer Al Tair, and Jumeirah Village Circle. The primary goal is to expand the capacity of current intersections and bridges by approximately 19,600 vehicles per hour. This expansion aims to streamline traffic flow along Al Khail Road, reduce congestion at flyovers, ensure smoother traffic movement, and decrease travel times by up to 30 percent.

AED 700M Boost for Al Khail Road

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, highlighted the strategic significance of the Al Khail Road Improvement Project. According to Al Tayer, this project is crucial for enhancing the capacity of roads that run parallel to major thoroughfares such as Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road. Al Khail Road serves as a vital traffic corridor from Business Bay crossing to its junction with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, featuring six lanes in each direction.

Project Details

The improvement efforts begin with Zabeel, focusing on constructing a three-lane bridge spanning 700 metres to facilitate around 4,800 vehicles per hour. This bridge aims to directly link traffic from Zabeel Palace Street and Oud Metha Road onto Al Khail Road towards Abu Dhabi. Surface road improvements are also part of the project to enhance connectivity from Al Khail Road to Financial Centre Street towards Sheikh Zayed Road.

At Meydan, a two-lane bridge extending 610 metres will be constructed to accommodate 3,200 vehicles per hour, linking traffic from Al Meydan Road onto Al Khail Road towards Deira. This site will also see improvements on surface roads extending 1,550 metres for better traffic flow towards Ras Al Khor Road.

The project also includes significant improvements at Al Quoz 1 and Ghadeer Al Tair by constructing two-lane bridges and upgrading surface roads for enhanced traffic connectivity. Similarly, at Jumeirah Village Circle, a two-lane bridge spanning 700 metres will be built along with upgrades to 900 metres of surface roads.

Furthermore, the project entails surface widening works on Al Khail Road in Al Jaddaf and at the entrance to Business Bay. These enhancements aim to increase road capacity and ensure smoother traffic flow towards Deira and Abu Dhabi respectively.

Past Achievements

In 2012, RTA successfully completed an earlier phase of the Al Khail Road Improvement Project. This phase transformed existing roundabouts into flyovers and widened the road to six lanes in each direction, significantly improving traffic flow.

The ongoing efforts by RTA underscore its commitment to developing Dubai's infrastructure to meet the growing demands of its population and economy. The Al Khail Road Improvement Project stands as a testament to this commitment, promising enhanced connectivity and reduced travel times for residents and visitors alike.
