Ras Al Khaimah Hosts Over 500 Students For Innovation And Sustainability Challenge
Over 500 students from various educational institutions in Ras Al Khaimah have actively participated in the Ras Al Khaimah Innovation and Sustainability Challenge (RISC), a significant initiative aimed at fostering awareness and generating innovative solutions in the realm of environmental sustainability. This challenge, a collaborative effort between the University of Bolton Academic Centre - Ras Al Khaimah and the International Workshop on Advanced Materials (IWAM) science conference, has successfully engaged students across primary, secondary, and university levels in a series of competitions designed to stimulate creative thinking towards global challenges.
The RISC has been structured to include three distinct categories for participants: primary grades, secondary grades, and university level, encompassing six competitions within each category. These competitions range from poster and photography contests to project presentations, case studies, and even colouring and drawing for the younger participants. The initiative not only aims to educate but also rewards innovation through monetary prizes for winners in each category.

In addition to engaging students, RISC introduced a separate category targeting businesses in the industrial sector and individuals in Ras Al Khaimah. This segment focused on devising practical solutions for recycling or repurposing waste or used tires, with the winning idea holding the potential for real-world implementation to benefit local communities and the environment.
The culmination of this challenge was marked by a winners’ celebration at the 15th IWAM held in Ras Al Khaimah. This event provided a platform for students to present their ideas to some of the leading scientists in the field of Advanced Materials. Participants hailed from a diverse array of institutions including the Higher Colleges of Technology, University of Stirling, Delhi Private School, GEMS Westminster School, and Al Manar Private School.
Raj Nambiar, Campus Director at the University of Bolton Academic Centre - Ras Al Khaimah, expressed his satisfaction with the expanded participation in this year's challenge. He highlighted Ras Al Khaimah's commitment to sustainability and educational excellence under the vision of H.H. Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah. Nambiar emphasized that RISC is among the many initiatives aimed at preparing students to be future leaders and thinkers.
Encouraging a New Generation of Scientists
The IWAM conference plays a crucial role in inspiring young individuals towards science, particularly emphasizing the involvement of 12th Grade students from across the Emirate. In collaboration with the Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation for Policy Research, these students had the opportunity to attend presentations by esteemed scientists on the second day of IWAM. The conference is notably supported by Stevin Rock, one of the world's largest quarrying companies, which boasts a production capacity exceeding 80 million tonnes per year.
This initiative reflects Ras Al Khaimah's dedication to fostering innovation and sustainability among its youth, positioning them as proactive contributors to environmental solutions. Through such comprehensive engagement in science and sustainability, RISC is setting a precedent for educational initiatives globally.
