Philippines Seeks Major Trade Deals At WTO Ministerial Conference In UAE
The World Trade Organisation's (WTO) 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13), set to be held in Abu Dhabi from 26th to 29th February 2024, is anticipated to be a pivotal event for global trade discussions, with the Philippines playing a significant role. Alfredo E. Pascual, the Secretary for Trade and Industry of the Philippines, shared his optimism regarding the conference's potential outcomes in an email interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) from Manila.
Pascual expressed his enthusiasm for the inclusion of Comoros and Timor-Leste as new WTO members, highlighting the progress in fisheries subsidies negotiations. He also underscored the importance of reaching substantial agreements on agriculture to enhance food security globally. The UAE's role as the host of MC13, following its successful organisation of COP28 in Dubai in December 2023, was praised by Pascual for setting a promising stage for meaningful advancements within the WTO framework.

The conference will serve as a platform for discussions on critical issues such as e-commerce, trade and environmental sustainability, and inclusivity within the multilateral trading system. The Philippines, known for advocating WTO reform and modernisation, aims to push forward discussions on development and ensure a balanced global trading system.
Addressing climate change through sustainable trade practices is another priority for the Philippines, given its vulnerability to climate impacts. Pascual highlighted the strategic role of the WTO in promoting the trade of climate-smart technologies and fostering a transition towards renewable energy. This approach is seen as vital for economic growth and sustainability in developing and least-developed countries.
The strengthening trade relations between the UAE and the Philippines were also discussed by Pascual. He commended the UAE's strategic initiatives, such as the Comprehensive Economic Partnerships (CEPAs) signed with several countries, including a recent agreement with the Philippines. These partnerships are expected to boost trade and investment flows, offering opportunities in sectors like construction, energy, and logistics.
The MC13 presents an excellent opportunity for both nations to explore further collaboration, leveraging their strategic positions to enhance global trade dynamics. With both countries committed to sustainable development and modernising trade practices, their partnership at MC13 could lead to significant advancements in addressing contemporary global challenges.
In summary, the upcoming WTO Ministerial Conference in Abu Dhabi is poised to be a critical juncture for global trade discussions. With the Philippines actively participating and advocating for key issues such as food security, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development, alongside strengthening its trade relations with the UAE, MC13 could mark a significant step towards a more equitable and sustainable global trade environment.
