Exploring SearchGPT: How OpenAI's Latest Feature Is Redefining Search Separate from AI Training

OpenAI is currently testing SearchGPT, a new search feature prototype that merges the capabilities of AI models with web information to provide quick and timely answers. This prototype is being launched to a select group of users and publishers for feedback. Although temporary, the best features from this prototype will eventually be integrated into ChatGPT. Interested users can join the waitlist to try it out.

SearchGPT aims to streamline the process of finding answers on the web, which often requires multiple searches. By combining conversational AI with real-time web data, OpenAI believes it can make searching faster and more efficient.

Enhanced Search Experience

SearchGPT is designed to deliver immediate responses to queries using up-to-date web information, along with clear links to relevant sources. Users can ask follow-up questions in a conversational manner, with context building through each query.

The prototype also focuses on helping users connect with publishers by prominently citing and linking to them in search results. Responses include clear attributions and links, allowing users to quickly access additional information in a sidebar with source links.

OpenAI Trials SearchGPT Prototype

OpenAI intends to continually improve SearchGPT by focusing on areas like local information and commerce. They will gather feedback from users and publishers during this prototype phase and incorporate the best aspects into ChatGPT.

Collaborating with Publishers

OpenAI is committed to supporting a thriving ecosystem of publishers and creators. By highlighting high-quality content in a conversational interface, they aim to enhance user engagement while offering more choices in search results. For decades, search has been essential for publishers and creators to reach their audience.

"AI search is going to become one of the key ways that people navigate the internet, and it's crucial, in these early days, that the technology is built in a way that values, respects, and protects journalism and publishers. We look forward to partnering with OpenAI in the process, and creating a new way for readers to discover The Atlantic," said Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic.

OpenAI has partnered with publishers to develop this experience and continues seeking their feedback. Alongside launching SearchGPT, they are introducing tools for publishers to manage their appearance in SearchGPT results. Notably, SearchGPT focuses solely on search and remains separate from training OpenAI's generative AI foundation models. Sites can appear in search results even if they opt out of generative AI training.

According to OpenAI, publishers have expressed interest in understanding how best to engage with AI search products and track their content's performance. OpenAI plans to use this prototype phase to gather insights and share findings with publishers.

"Sam and the truly talented team at OpenAI innately understand that for AI-powered search to be effective, it must be founded on the highest-quality, most reliable information furnished by trusted sources. For the heavens to be in equilibrium, the relationship between technology and content must be symbiotic and provenance must be protected," stated Robert Thomson, Chief Executive of News Corp.
