OpenAI CEO Urges for Global AI Oversight, Nominates UAE as Leader

During the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, made a significant proposal for the establishment of a global system to oversee artificial intelligence (AI). Altman, addressing the audience via video conferencing, suggested that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) could play a pivotal role in leading these crucial discussions. He recommended organizing a one-day conference to allow global leaders to brainstorm and strategize on AI oversight.

Despite the rapid advancements in AI, Altman believes that we are still in the early stages of its development. He likened current technology to a black and white TV screen, suggesting that significant improvements are on the horizon. Altman expressed optimism about the future capabilities of AI, including the upcoming ChatGPT 5, which he anticipates will be smarter, multimodal, and faster.

The impact of AI on education and scientific research was highlighted by Altman, who envisioned a world where everyone has access to personalized tutoring and medical advice. He urged governments to embrace AI technologies to enhance citizen services and modernize workplaces. The WGS 2024 serves as a platform for global leaders to discuss future trends and challenges. This year's summit has attracted over 25 heads of state, more than 85 international and regional organizations, and 140 governments. With over 200 speakers participating in more than 110 dialogues and sessions, the summit is addressing key global issues. Additionally, the event has drawn more than 4000 attendees and is hosting over 23 ministerial meetings and executive sessions attended by more than 300 ministers.

Altman's call for a global AI oversight system underscores the critical need for international cooperation in managing the development and deployment of AI technologies.
