Oman Enhances Cybersecurity Measures Amidst Rising Online Threats
In a significant stride towards bolstering its cyber resilience, the Sultanate of Oman, through its Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT), has effectively managed over 460 cybersecurity incidents in the year 2023. This achievement underscores the nation's dedicated efforts in safeguarding its digital infrastructure and enhancing its cybersecurity posture amidst an era of increasing cyber threats.
The MTCIT's annual report, titled "2023 Digital Indicators in ICT Sector," reveals a comprehensive overview of the country's information and communication technology (ICT) advancements. Notably, the National Digital Forensic Laboratory resolved a total of 241 cybercrime cases. Additionally, the ministry's Threats Notification and Alert Service issued 86 alerts on potential security threats, highlighting the proactive steps taken to mitigate cyber vulnerabilities before they could escalate.
The report further illustrates Oman's significant digital activity, with more than 30 million electronic transactions processed and over 3.5 million electronic certificates issued over the past year. These figures not only reflect the growing reliance on digital solutions but also mark a pivotal shift towards digital transformation aimed at enhancing service delivery and operational efficiency within the government sector.
The telecommunications sector in Oman has also shown remarkable progress, with investments reaching approximately RO227 million and revenues nearing RO805 million. A noteworthy highlight is the sector's Omanisation rate, which stands at an impressive 94%, demonstrating the government's commitment to fostering local talent and empowering Omani professionals.
Advancements in Technology and Infrastructure
In the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Oman has made significant strides, with investments exceeding RO31.2 million. The MTCIT launched six pilot AI projects in 2023, further evidenced by the publication of 76 research papers on the subject. This proactive engagement with AI technology is supported by a burgeoning startup ecosystem, evident from the 48 new business registrations, indicative of a vibrant and entrepreneurial landscape.
Oman's foray into space technology represents another major milestone, with investments reaching US$155 million in 2021. The establishment of three specialized centres for space science underscores the sultanate's ambitious plans in the sector, paving the way for future innovations and explorations in space technology.
Infrastructure development has also seen significant advancement, notably with the deployment of 4,566 5G stations across the nation. This initiative is crucial for enhancing connectivity and facilitating the rollout of next-generation network services. Muscat, leading the expansion, boasts 1,680 stations, followed by North Batinah with 720, Dhofar with 532, South Batinah with 491, and Dakhliyah with 344, among other governorates.
In sum, Oman's concerted efforts in digital transformation, cybersecurity, AI, space technology, and telecommunications infrastructure development highlight the nation's forward-thinking approach and commitment to embracing technological advancements.
