Microsoft Office 2024 For Mac Offers New One-Time Purchase Option Without Subscription

At last, it appears Microsoft has tossed those suffering from odious subscription fatigue a bone. Mac users are now offered a new one-time purchase option for its Office suite. The days of being chained to the monthly or yearly payment plans of Microsoft 365 are now optional, thanks to the release of Office 2024 for Mac. Those who own their software rather than renting now have a pretty welcome alternative.

Let's cut to the chase. There are two editions available to purchase:

- Office Home 2024: This one costs $149.99 and includes all core applications like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. This is your best bet for most home users wanting to avoid the subscription model yet still wanting the basics.

- Office Home & Business 2024: It costs $249.99, adds Outlook to the mix, and adds commercial usage rights to the suite. For freelancers, small business owners, or anyone who needs email with their spreadsheets, this is a no-brainer.

It's not a radical shift from previous versions but does introduce some of the changes many users will appreciate. For one, Excel performance is better when multiple workbooks are opened at the same time, for which number crunchers everywhere should be grateful; secondly, PowerPoint's new Cameo feature allows you to embed live camera feeds directly into presentations. Think of it as the ultimate "look, I'm working remotely" flex during virtual meetings.

Yet, for those already comfortable sitting in a recent version of Office, these updates might not be so groundbreaking as to warrant an immediate upgrade. If you like what you have, you're safe just skipping the queue. But if you're a new user or otherwise want to get off the subscription treadmill, this is your ticket to Office ownership.

Keep in mind, however, this is a "what-you-buy-is-what-you-get" deal-no continuous feature updates, as with Microsoft 365. It's just cheaper if you can live with the functionality as it is for the foreseeable future. Besides, it's kind of hard to overlook that this is the first standalone version since 2021-and quite the time for Mac users longing for the simple times.

Microsoft has also packed in a few AI-related features and usability improvements, such as improved swipe gestures for trackpads, and the ability to ink like a pro in OneNote. And don't forget, Office 2024 will work on the latest macOS versions, as well as Windows 10 and 11.

For the Mac crowd, the bottom line is this: If you are over subscriptions, and you want a classic, reliable suite of productivity tools, Office 2024 is going to be the breath of fresh air your desktop may well need. What's more, no repeating fees, just one buy, and you're good to go.
