Introducing Llama Design Drive: How To Access Meta’s New AI Tech Initiative For Your Startup In MENA
Meta has partnered with Startupbootcamp to promote AI use in the MENA business sector, which could generate up to $320 billion by 2030. This collaboration will leverage Meta's Llama 3.1 open-source Large Language Model (LLM) for innovation and product development, addressing key challenges faced by businesses in the region.
MENA is well-positioned for AI adoption as governments and businesses are increasingly recognising the global shift towards advanced technologies. The Middle East is expected to capture 2% of total global AI benefits by 2030, with annual growth rates in AI's contribution to GDP projected between 20-34% across the region.

The initiative, named Llama Design Drive, is tailored to meet the specific needs of the MENA region. It aims to empower local startups with advanced AI technologies through a series of intensive workshops and mentorship sessions. These sessions will be held across the UAE, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Egypt in three four-week sprints.
To guide the definition of design challenges and explore innovative solutions using AI, strategic partnerships have been established with industry leaders such as RTA (The Roads and Transport Authority), Chalhoub Group, and Dubai Holding. These collaborations aim to bridge the gap between established companies and dynamic AI startups.
Llama Design Drive offers a unique opportunity for startups to gain experience by working on real-world challenges in sectors like mobility, aviation, energy distribution, retail, and real estate. By using Meta's Llama 3.1 model, these startups can develop cutting-edge solutions that address pressing issues in these industries.
The program not only promotes AI adoption but also facilitates connections between startups, corporations, and industry experts. "Our program not only promotes the adoption of AI technologies to develop solutions for corporate challenges but also facilitates connections between startups, corporates, and industry experts to expand networks and gain valuable knowledge and technical skills," explains Ibrahim "Abe" Seksek, CEO MENA at Startupbootcamp.
Startups participating in the program will have a chance to be fast-tracked into a global initiative sponsored by Meta. They could receive up to $500,000 to support further development of their products. This provides a significant boost for startups looking to scale their innovations globally.
"The whole world is excited to see how AI can add value to people's lives," said Joulan Abdul Khalek, Policy Programs Manager for Africa Middle East and Turkiye at Meta. "Llama Design Drive is a great example of how open source can bring people together to co-create meaningful AI solutions. By doing so, we hope to cultivate a thriving community of tech talent across the region."
