Mega Green Accelerator Launches To Propel MENA Start-ups Towards Climate Solutions
In a significant boost to the region's efforts towards sustainable development, the Mega Green Accelerator has opened its doors for startups across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The initiative is designed to foster innovation in circular economy solutions, clean energy transition, and climate mitigation technologies, including water and agriculture sectors. Announced at COP28 in the UAE, the programme is a collaborative effort between PepsiCo, SABIC, AstroLabs, and other strategic partners, aiming to nurture the next generation of innovators tackling both regional and global sustainability challenges.
The first round of the Mega Green Accelerator programme will concentrate on innovation within the circular economy and transitions in clean energy, water, and agriculture. Entrepreneurs selected for the program will benefit from six months of mentorship from industry experts, access to significant networks, and business opportunities facilitated by the programme partners and some of the region's most prominent business leaders. Furthermore, one winning company will receive seed funding at the programme's conclusion to fuel its further expansion. Applications for this transformative six-month mentorship programme are open until March 15, inviting established and revenue-generating startups focused on relevant business models to apply.

Eugene Willemsen, CEO at PepsiCo for Africa, Middle East, and South Asia, highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation in addressing sustainability challenges. He noted the increasing venture of young entrepreneurs into disruptive ideas within the region and emphasized the necessity for innovative climate technologies to mitigate the impacts of climate change and extreme weather conditions. Willemsen stressed the potential for creating a network of MENA-based innovators to tackle sustainability challenges, which could lead to significant advancements on multiple fronts.
Roland Daher, Chief Executive Officer of AstroLabs, underscored the Gulf region's role as a global testbed for sustainability solutions. Through partnerships with PepsiCo, SABIC, and other strategic collaborators, the initiative aims to attract regional and global businesses to accelerate their development within the Gulf's sustainability sector. Daher expressed enthusiasm for spearheading developments in the region's climate tech sector by connecting diverse businesses capable of driving innovation.
Strategic investment partners, including Dubai Future District Fund, Venture Souq, and Shurooq Partners, will provide platforms for investment opportunities, mentorship in raising capital, and networking opportunities. They will also contribute to defining startup criteria and participating in the selection process to maximise investment success.
Ecosystem partners like the London Business School Entrepreneurship Club, Berytech, American University of Cairo Venture Lab, and others will mobilise applicants through their networks, amplify accelerator knowledge, and communicate progress. Schneider Electric will support the Accelerator as a prize partner, contributing to the final selection of participants.
Given the MENA region's climate, where temperatures are warming at nearly twice the global average rate, investment in climate change mitigation solutions is crucial. Private sector initiatives like the Mega Green Accelerator are vital in supporting the UAE's ambitious sustainability goals.
