Meta Now Allows You To Build Your Own 'Role-Playing' Avatar On Instagram
Meta has introduced AI Studio, a tool enabling users to create characters with unique personalities, traits, and interests. This includes the option to base these characters on their own personalities. Creators can also use their digital avatars to interact with fans through direct messages.
The tool is powered by Meta's Llama 3.1, the latest and largest version of its mostly free artificial intelligence models. Released last week, Llama 3.1 supports multiple languages and boasts performance metrics that rival paid models from competitors like OpenAI.

AI Studio will initially be available to Instagram Business account users, with plans to roll it out to all Meta users in the US over the coming weeks. Mark Zuckerberg highlighted potential uses for custom AI chatbots during a discussion with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. He suggested they could serve as entertainment or personal support tools, such as role-playing scenarios like asking for a raise or resolving conflicts with friends. "You can basically role-play that and see how the conversation will go, and get feedback on it," he explained.
Meta has implemented strict usage policies for AI Studio. Users must limit chatbot interactions to specific audiences and avoid discussing certain topics. The policy prohibits creating chatbots representing real persons other than themselves, historical figures, religious icons, mass murderers, or any objects deemed hateful, explicit, or illegal.
In a blog post, Meta showcased several celebrity-built chatbots. Examples include "Eat Like You Live There!" by chef Marc Murphy for dining recommendations and "What Lens Bro" by photographer Angel Barclay for photography tips. Instagram personalities Chris Ashley, Violet Benson, Don Allen, and Kane Kallaway have also created chatbot versions of themselves.

To begin creating an AI character, users can visit ai.meta.com/ai-studio or start a new message on Instagram and select "Create an AI chat." From there, they can customize their AI character's name, personality, tone, avatar, and tagline. Meta has also provided a step-by-step guide with expert tips to assist users in bringing their AI characters to life.
OpenAI is also working on advanced AI models under a project code-named "Strawberry," details of which remain confidential even within the company. Reuters reported in July that OpenAI aims to demonstrate these models' advanced reasoning capabilities.

Zuckerberg emphasized that every creator could build an AI version of themselves or an assistant for community interaction. This initiative aligns with Meta's broader strategy of integrating advanced AI technologies into its platforms.
