Instagram Updates Safety Measures: Teens To Restrict Interactions To 'Close Friends'
In a significant move to address online harassment, Instagram, on Thursday, announced the expansion of its "Limits" tool, specifically designed for teenagers. This enhancement is aimed at helping teens restrict unwanted interactions, ensuring they engage only with comments, messages, story replies, tags, and mentions from individuals within their "Close Friends" circle. Interactions from users outside this select group will be automatically muted, aiming to create a more secure online space for younger audiences.
The introduction of the Limits tool in 2021 was a direct response to the wave of online harassment experienced by English footballers Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho after England's defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 finals. Initially, the tool allowed users to limit interactions to those they follow and those who have been followers for an extended period. With this update, the feature is now fine-tuned for teenagers, setting the default to the "Close Friends" option to protect them from bullying and harassment, reflecting Instagram's commitment to fostering a safer social media environment for its younger users.
Enhanced Control for Teens
The updated Limits tool offers teenagers the ability to narrow down interactions to their "Close Friends" group. However, it allows for a degree of flexibility, not entirely blocking other users. Those outside the "Close Friends" group can still engage with the teens' content, but their activities will be invisible in the teen's feed. Additionally, the feature includes an option for teens to restrict interactions from recent followers or those they do not follow back. Furthermore, Instagram has updated its "Restrict" feature, enabling users to limit interactions from certain accounts without the need for outright blocking, effectively making comments from restricted accounts invisible and preventing them from tagging or mentioning the user.
Proactive Measures by Meta
Meta, Instagram's parent company, has taken additional steps to safeguard young users. Earlier this year, the company implemented restrictions to stop adults over 18 from messaging teenagers who haven't followed them back. In April, Meta introduced a feature to blur nudity in direct messages (DMs) sent to teens on Instagram, part of a broader effort to enhance the platform's safety measures. This comes amid increasing pressure on Meta to ensure the well-being of its younger audience. In October last year, over 40 U.S. states filed a lawsuit against Meta, accusing it of designing products that negatively impact children's mental health. More recently, the European Union initiated an investigation into the potentially addictive designs of Facebook and Instagram and their impact on minors.
