IEC Telecom Launches Skyphone To Empower First Responders In MENA Region

In a significant development within the humanitarian response sector, the IEC Telecom Group introduced an innovative device. This device, known as Skyphone, developed by Thuraya, stands as the first universal smartphone designed to provide both cellular and satellite connectivity. This pioneering technology, enhanced by value-added services from IEC Telecom, is set to revolutionize critical communications, particularly benefiting first responders and camp administrators across the MENA region by offering flexible and reliable communication options in challenging environments.

As the global digital landscape continues to evolve, with internet usage predicted to reach 5.35 billion people in 2024 and an increase of 97 million new users in 2023 alone, the disparity in internet access becomes more pronounced. Notably, a significant portion of the global population, especially in areas where humanitarian aid is most needed, remains disconnected from the internet. This gap underscores the importance of innovative solutions like Skyphone to ensure effective communication during humanitarian missions.

Skyphone New Era in Humanitarian Comms

Skyphone's introduction comes at a time when the demand for dependable communication solutions is at an all-time high, driven by the increasing occurrence of natural disasters and geopolitical tensions. The device is designed to withstand challenging conditions, featuring a dust and water-resistant casing. It supports both voice and data services over GSM networks and will offer Direct-to-Device satellite services, including calls and SMS in 2024, with further enhancements like IoT and texting capabilities scheduled for 2025.

IEC Telecom, with its nearly three-decade commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts, has equipped Skyphone with additional functionalities to cater to the unique needs of the sector. Notably, the device supports Push-to-Talk (PTT) functionality and GPS tracking, enabling efficient group communications and real-time monitoring of team locations, which are crucial for the coordination of rescue operations and long-term missions. According to Nabil Ben Soussia, Group CCO of IEC Telecom, these features are indispensable for quick response and operational efficiency during disaster relief efforts and humanitarian camps.

The Skyphone leverages Traksat technology to offer a comprehensive PTT solution that includes a dispatch console for remote management and an end-user application that is intuitive to use. This ensures that in satellite mode, users have access to a range of services including geofencing, push notifications, SOS functionality, and two-way messaging. When operating in cellular mode, the Skyphone's PTT solution expands to include multimedia exchange and video calls, further enhancing communication capabilities.

This launch is in line with Yahsat's strategy to empower users worldwide with the benefits of space technology through Direct-to-Device services. By introducing Skyphone, IEC Telecom and Thuraya are not only addressing the immediate communication needs of the humanitarian sector but are also opening up new possibilities for reliable and efficient communication in remote and underserved areas around the globe.
