Gulfood 2024 Culminates In Dubai With Michelin-Starred Chefs And Global Food Trends
The Dubai World Trade Centre recently hosted the conclusion of Gulfood 2024, the largest annual food and beverage event globally. This year's edition, spanning five days, brought together a constellation of internationally acclaimed chefs, collectively holding 25 Michelin stars, to participate in over 90 Masterclasses. These sessions were dedicated to showcasing traditional cooking techniques, the use of authentic ingredients, and sharing the narratives behind some of the world's most cherished dishes.
Additionally, the event featured Chef Talks, where both established and emerging culinary talents offered insights into the dishes poised to captivate global palates this year, alongside sharing valuable culinary tips. Notable participants included Chef Alain Passard of L'Arpege, Chef Enrico Cerea of da Vittorio, Chef Joan Roca of El Celler de Can Roca, and Chef Mark Donald of The Glenturret, with Chef Vladimir Mukhin representing local talent from White Rabbit Krasota in Dubai.

This year's theme underscored the fusion of rich heritage and traditional culinary practices with contemporary and innovative techniques. A highlight was Dubai World Cuisine, a series of collaborative dinners across the city featuring homegrown chefs and European culinary icons. These events took place at six renowned Dubai venues - Krasota, Lowe, Takahisa, Armani Ristorante, Folly, and F.R.N.D.S. Grand Cafe - aiming to cement Dubai's cultural identity on the global culinary map.
Noteworthy collaborations included Michelin-starred chef Akira Back with Pepe Solla of Casa Solla restaurant and Chef Kelvin Cheung of Jun’s, Dubai with Begona Rodrigo of La Salita in Valencia. Tracy Reynolds, Consul-General of Canada in Dubai, highlighted the UAE as a significant market for Canadian food products and a pivotal regional hub. In 2023, UAE exported approximately US$50 million worth of food products to Canada, while Canada's exports to the UAE nearly reached US$700 million annually.
The Gulfood Inspire Conference saw Dr. Morgaine Gaye, a leading global food futurologist, discussing upcoming F&B trends. These include an emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendly products, reducing waste and packaging, growth in locally sourced products, a resurgence of heritage flavours, more hand-crafted products, and a focus on aesthetics.
Bandar Akrin, Founder and CEO of Kinza, revealed that during Gulfood 2024, partnerships were formed to enter ten new markets with ongoing negotiations for further expansion. Martin Camus, VP – Procurement at DNATA USA, praised this year's event for its emphasis on consistency and quality among suppliers as well as detailed insights into their sustainability efforts and supply chains.
