Google's Latest Update Adds Gemini Nano AI And Safety Features To Pixel 8 And 8a

Google has unveiled its June Feature Drop, introducing an array of new features across its Pixel devices, including the Pixel smartphones and Pixel Watches. This update, commencing roll-out today, is set to enhance user experience with advancements like the integration of the Gemini Nano AI model and the introduction of car crash detection on the Pixel Watch 2. Users can expect these updates to be available on all supported devices within the coming weeks.

The recent update extends the Gemini Nano AI model's on-device processing capabilities to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a smartphones, following its initial integration in the Pixel 8 Pro. This AI model allows certain AI features and tools to operate without needing an internet connection. To access these capabilities, users must activate developer options in their device settings.

Recorder App Improvements

The recorder app on Pixel devices sees significant enhancements, particularly with its summarise feature. Now providing more detailed summaries, the update introduces auto-detection of the speaker's name and offers downloadable and exportable text transcriptions. These improvements, however, are exclusive to devices equipped with Gemini Nano integration, including the Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8a.

Enhanced Device Tracking and DisplayPort Support

Pixel 8 series smartphones now feature an improved Find My Device Network capability, allowing users to track their phones for up to 23 hours after the device is turned off or runs out of battery. Additionally, the update brings DisplayPort functionality to the Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8a, enabling users to mirror content to larger displays through a USB-C cable.

Photography and Call Management Features

For photography enthusiasts, the update automatically identifies the 'best moment' in pictures shot in HDR+ on Pixel 6 and newer devices, ensuring high-quality images with a single shutter tap. Furthermore, Pixel smartphones from the Pixel 6 onwards now include a reverse phone number search feature, allowing users to identify unknown callers directly from their call logs.

Pixel Watch 2 Gets Car Crash Detection

A significant safety feature, car crash detection, has been added to the Pixel Watch 2. Similar to its availability on Pixel smartphones, this feature, now accessible in select regions including India, enables the device to dial emergency services automatically if the user is unresponsive following a car crash. The Pixel Watch 2 will also notify emergency contacts in such events.

Pixel Watch Updates for Enhanced Connectivity

Pixel Watch users in Germany and the US can now link their Google Wallet and PayPal accounts to their watches for streamlined digital payments. Additionally, the update improves the Google Home app experience on the Pixel Watches, introducing easier access to Google Home devices via a new widget.

This June Feature Drop from Google signifies its commitment to refining the user experience across its Pixel range, integrating advanced technology to enhance both safety features and everyday functionalities. As these updates roll out, Pixel device users can look forward to a more connected and efficient digital experience.
