Google Unveils 'Listen To This Page' TTS Feature For Chrome On Android
Google's latest update to the Chrome browser on Android devices introduces an innovative feature designed to enhance user experience by employing text-to-speech (TTS) technology. Dubbed "Listen to this page," this feature allows users to have text-heavy web pages read aloud, offering a hands-free and accessible way to consume digital content. Available through the three-dot overflow menu in Chrome for Android, once a page loads fully, users can find this option nestled between the "Translate" and "Add to Home screen" functionalities.
The "Listen to this page" feature is equipped with playback controls akin to those found in music or podcast applications, providing flexibility in how content is consumed. Users can pause the reading, adjust the speed of speech, and navigate through the text with 10-second skips either forward or backwards. A notable addition is the mini-player that appears at the screen's bottom, incorporating playback controls and speed adjustments ranging from 0.8x to 4x. This mini-player also grants access to settings for text highlighting, auto-scrolling, and voice selection, ensuring a customizable listening experience.
Enhanced Accessibility and Language Support
One of the standout features of "Listen to this page" is its ability to function seamlessly across different user actions. For instance, listeners can switch between tabs or lock their screen while the audio continues playing, maintaining the mini-player's visibility for uninterrupted browsing. Should the Chrome browser be closed, the feature smartly resumes from where it left off upon reopening.
Expanding its appeal, the feature supports an array of languages beyond English, including French, German, Arabic, Hindi, and Spanish. Each language comes with diverse voice options tailored to offer a variety of auditory experiences. English (US) users can choose from voices like Ruby, known for its warm, mid-pitch tone, and River, which offers a calm mid-pitch. Meanwhile, English (UK) provides options such as Cloud, with its soothing mid-pitch, and Dale, featuring a calm low-pitch. Additionally, English (India) users have access to Lake, a calm, mid-pitch voice option.
Google's initiative to incorporate text-to-speech technology into its Chrome browser for Android marks a significant step forward in making digital content more accessible and enjoyable for users worldwide. By accommodating various languages and offering user-friendly controls, "Listen to this page" promises a more inclusive and versatile web browsing experience.
