Google Launches New Multitasking Feature For Chrome On Android
Google has launched a new feature for its Chrome browser on Android, introducing a minimised custom tab functionality that leverages Picture-in-Picture (PiP) technology. This innovation aims to streamline the transition between native applications and web content, offering users a more fluid multitasking experience. According to an announcement made on the Chromium Blog, this feature is set to enhance the web browsing experience within apps by allowing multitasking across different interfaces.
The PiP mode for Chrome's custom tab is specifically designed to integrate with native Android applications, including Google's own suite of apps like Gmail and Chats. It is anticipated that this functionality will extend to other applications that utilize the Chrome browser for opening links. However, it will not be compatible with applications that contain built-in browser capabilities, such as Instagram by Meta.
One of the key attributes of the Chrome tab in PiP mode is its flexibility. Users can move the floating window around the screen and adjust its size to suit their needs. This ensures that they can continue to engage with other applications without interruption. Despite these advantages, the PiP view has its limitations. It only displays the webpage's name and domain, requiring users to maximise the window for full interaction with the content. Furthermore, initial tests have revealed that links accessed through the Google Messages app do not trigger the new minimised button, despite the app being a native Android application.
This development reflects Google's ongoing efforts to refine and enhance user experience across its platforms. By enabling a seamless transition between apps and the web, Google aims to simplify the digital landscape for Android users. While the full potential of this feature is yet to be realized, its introduction marks a significant step towards more integrated and efficient browsing capabilities on mobile devices.
