GISEC 2024 Spotlights Women in Cybersecurity

Alina Tan, one of the Top 30 Women in Security in ASEAN, is a powerful representation of female success in a male-dominated field. Her passion for cybersecurity grew from her interest in motorsport. She established a specialised interest group, Car Security Quarter, and leads the Singapore Chapter of the Automotive Security Research Group. Tan believes in the power of representation and visibility to inspire a new generation of women in STEM. Judy Ngure, a cybersecurity practitioner for over five years, sits on various advisory boards across Africa. She co-authored a book celebrating African Women in Security and aims to inspire other women to enter the industry.

Caitlin Sarian, with a decade of consulting experience at EY and a previous role at TikTok's Global Cybersecurity Advocacy and Culture team, will be attending the Women in Cybersecurity roundtable and leading a talk on improving cybersecurity training approaches. These women acknowledge the challenges faced by young women in the cybersecurity field. They often lack support, recognition, and validation for their contributions. Inclusive programmes and opportunities for professional growth are limited, resulting in feelings of being side-lined.

A lack of understanding about the multifaceted nature of cybersecurity and the overwhelming number of available bootcamps and courses further discourage women from pursuing a career in the industry. To address these challenges, awareness, accessibility, and advocacy are crucial. Governments and enterprises can create more opportunities for women in tech and cybersecurity through targeted outreach efforts, mentorship and development programs, and highlighting female role models.

Governments can also drive accessibility through education and training initiatives and scholarships.GISEC Global 2024, now in its 13th edition, will be the largest and most impactful cybersecurity event in the Middle East. It will feature over 20,000 visitors, 750 exhibiting companies, 350 cybersecurity speakers, and over 1,000 ethical hackers from more than 130 countries. The event aims to fuel the growth of a diverse cybersecurity industry that has the potential to transform the world's digital behaviors. By showcasing the achievements and contributions of women in cybersecurity, GISEC Global 2024 is paving the way for a more inclusive and innovative industry.
