Geely Expands GEESATCOM Network With 11 Satellite Launch For Connected Mobility

On August 9, Geely Holding's aerospace division, Geespace, achieved a significant milestone by sending 11 new satellites into low Earth orbit. These satellites are now part of the Geely Future Mobility Constellation, dubbed GEESATCOM, marking the formation of the fourth orbital plane. This launch brings the total count of operational satellites for Geespace to 41, enhancing the capabilities of the automotive industry through ultra-precise positioning, reliable data connectivity, and robust communication systems.

This system is designed to revolutionise autonomous driving and connected vehicle technologies. By the end of 2025, when Phase One is completed, Geespace plans to have a constellation of 72 satellites that will offer global real-time coverage. This network will support various functions including autonomous driving, urban air mobility, and vehicle-to-everything communications, serving over 200 million users worldwide.

Geely Launches 11 Satellites for Mobility Innovation

Geely's satellite network is not merely an assembly of space hardware; it's the backbone of a system that ensures vehicles stay connected and precisely located at all times. This is crucial for modern vehicles equipped with autonomous driving or advanced driver-assistance systems. The satellite constellation allows for centimeter-level GPS accuracy, real-time fleet tracking, and instant communication capabilities, even in locations where traditional coverage is lacking.

As a result, vehicle owners can enjoy enhanced navigation in remote areas, reliable updates, uninterrupted streaming of infotainment, and robust emergency connectivity, surpassing the limitations of cellular networks.

The development of GEESATCOM follows a series of successful orbital deployments, starting with the launch of nine GeeSAT-1 satellites in June 2022. These satellites introduced centimeter-level accuracy in positioning and played a pivotal role in vehicle-to-infrastructure systems, marking a significant achievement as China's first mass-produced low-orbit satellites with modular, high-resilience features.

Subsequent launches in February and September of 2024 expanded the constellation, bringing enhanced remote sensing, navigation capabilities, and 24/7 global coverage, thus enabling global vehicle connectivity through satellites.

The GEESATCOM project is a testament to Geely's commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and innovation. In the first half of 2024 alone, the company ramped up its research and development investments by nearly 18%, amounting to RMB 7 billion.

This investment supports the "Smart Geely 2025" strategy and its intelligent electrification roadmap, highlighting Geely's dedication to integrating cutting-edge connectivity into its vehicle platforms. This initiative is set to deliver a smarter, safer driving experience, reinforcing Geely's position at the forefront of technological advancement in the automotive sector.

The significance of GEESATCOM extends beyond simple connectivity; it aims to provide a seamless and constantly connected experience for all vehicle occupants. The high-precision positioning enabled by this satellite network allows vehicles to navigate through complex environments accurately, facilitating autonomous driving.

Moreover, it enhances fleet management through real-time data exchange, which is crucial for logistics and ride-hailing services. Additionally, the network's reliability ensures effective emergency response in remote or disaster-affected areas, improving safety and response times.
