Technology Innovation Institute Unveils Falcon Foundation for Open-Sourcing Generative AI
The Technology Innovation Institute (TII), a prominent global scientific research center and the applied research pillar of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), has recently unveiled the "Falcon Foundation." This non-profit organization is set to play a pivotal role in the advancement of open-source Generative AI models, fostering sustainable ecosystems that bolster technology development. TII has pledged a substantial US$300 million to fund these initiatives. The announcement was made at the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024, highlighting a significant moment for stakeholder collaboration towards establishing transparent governance models and facilitating knowledge exchange in the rapidly evolving AI sector.
Starting with TII’s proprietary Falcon AI models, the Falcon Foundation aims to gather stakeholders, developers, academia, industry professionals, and individuals to harness the potential of collective decision-making. This initiative is expected to expedite the democratization of AI, supported by distinguished Falcon Foundation Ambassadors, including leading AI professors from universities worldwide and key industry figures in AI. The Foundation's efforts will focus on customizing Falcon models for specific industries or sectors and providing open computing resources for ongoing research and development, ensuring the models' adaptability across various applications and contexts.

His Excellency Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary General of ATRC, emphasized the importance of initiatives like the Falcon Foundation in guiding AI development towards enhanced transparency and accessibility. Dr. Ray O. Johnson, CEO of TII, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the UAE's commitment to fostering transparency and collaboration in AI development. The Foundation is poised to benefit all entities engaged with and advocating for open-source responsible AI, minimizing reliance on external vendors and ensuring business continuity through independent technological choices.
The Falcon Foundation's dedication to open-sourcing and innovation in AI represents a forward-thinking approach that positions Abu Dhabi and the UAE at the forefront of a technology-driven future. It also supports global efforts in fostering cross-industry collaborations for significant AI advancements. WGS 2024 will see participation from over 4,000 individuals across public and private sectors in 110 interactive sessions, featuring 200 speakers from 80 international, regional, and intergovernmental organizations. The event will also host eight Nobel prize winners and facilitate 23 ministerial meetings with more than 300 ministers in attendance. In partnership with select knowledge partners, the Summit will launch over 25 strategic reports focusing on key practices and trends in vital sectors.
