The latest analysis from Kaspersky's Digital Footprint Intelligence reveals that the number of personal and corporate devices compromised soared to 10 million in 2023. This figure starkly highlights the escalating challenge posed by cybercriminals who target sensitive information.
The data, extracted from the analysis of infostealer malware log files traded on underground markets, indicates a significant rise in cyber attacks aiming to harvest log-in credentials. On average, each infected device yields 50.9 log-in details. These credentials span a variety of online services, including social media platforms, online banking, cryptocurrency wallets, and email services. This alarming trend underscores the pressing need for heightened cybersecurity measures to protect digital identities and assets.
Sergey Shcherbel, a cybersecurity expert at Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence, sheds light on the dark web's role in the proliferation of stolen data. According to Shcherbel, the value of log files containing login credentials on the dark web varies based on the desirability of the data and the method of sale. Criminals may opt to sell these credentials through subscription services, aggregators for specific requests, or shops that offer recently stolen data to an exclusive clientele. Prices for these log files start at USD 10 each, demonstrating the monetary motivation behind such cybercrimes.

Kaspersky's findings also highlight the global reach of cybersecurity threats, with 443,000 websites across the world experiencing compromised credentials within the last five years. The .com domain leads the list of those affected, with other top domains including Brazil (.br), India (.in), Colombia (.co), and Vietnam (.vn). Notably, the .in domain, associated with India, saw over 8 million compromised accounts in 2023 alone. This statistic not only points to the scale of the issue in India but also underscores the widespread nature of cybersecurity challenges.
