Brave Expands AI Capabilities: Leo Assistant Hits Android Devices

Brave has expanded the reach of its AI-powered assistant, Leo, to all Android users, marking a significant step forward in integrating artificial intelligence into everyday digital experiences. This development follows the initial launch of Leo on desktop platforms, showcasing Brave's commitment to enhancing user interaction across various devices. The company has also announced plans to introduce Leo on iOS in the forthcoming weeks, further broadening its accessibility.

Leo is designed to perform a wide array of tasks, including generating real-time summaries of web pages or videos, answering content-related questions, crafting long-form written content, translating or rewriting pages, creating video or audio transcriptions, and writing code. This versatility aims to provide users with a comprehensive tool that eliminates the need to rely on other popular Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT for similar tasks. Among the tasks Leo can assist with are planning recipes, offering travel advice, comparing products, and summarizing lengthy web content for users with time constraints.

Leo incorporates access to several leading LLMs, including Mixtral 8x7B by default on both desktop and Android platforms, Anthropic's Claude Instant, and Meta's Llama 2 13B. For users seeking enhanced capabilities, Brave offers a Leo Premium subscription at $14.99 per month, which extends higher rate limits and covers up to five devices across Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows.

What are Leo's Features?

Brave emphasises privacy in its operation of Leo, ensuring that chats with the assistant remain confidential. The company assures that it does not record chats or utilize them for model training. All requests are routed through an anonymization server, and responses generated by Leo are discarded post-creation. Moreover, utilizing Leo does not necessitate creating a Brave account. For subscribers, Brave employs unlinkable tokens for subscription validation, thereby maintaining user anonymity concerning activity and email.

To access Leo on Android, users must update to version 1.63 of the Brave browser. The roll-out of Brave Leo for Android will occur in phases over the next few days. Users can initiate their interaction with Leo by typing in the address bar and selecting 'Ask Leo' or opting for the on-page chat experience via the three-dot menu and tapping 'Leo'.

Brave's launch of Leo places it among a select group of browser companies integrating AI assistants into their offerings, a list that includes Opera with its AI assistant named Aria. Developed in collaboration with OpenAI, Aria features a chatbot-like interface that allows users to engage through questions and receive responses, highlighting the growing trend of browsers incorporating AI to enhance user experience.
