Discover How Apple watchOS 11 Revolutionises Sleep Monitoring With New Apnea Detection
Apple has started releasing watchOS 11 for compatible Apple Watches, alongside the iOS 18 update for iPhones. This new operating system introduces several features, with Sleep Apnea detection being a highlight. The Apple Watch Series 10 will have watchOS 11 pre-installed, and the update also brings Sleep Apnea detection to select older models like the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.
The Sleep Apnea detection feature on eligible Apple Watches uses sleep tracking data collected over ten nights within a month to assess if the user has the condition. Sleep Apnea can cause brief breathing interruptions during sleep, raising risks of hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and other health issues. The feature uses an accelerometer to monitor wrist movements linked to breathing pattern disruptions.
watchOS 11: New Features and Enhancements
With watchOS 11, users gain access to a new Training Load metric that compares workout intensity and duration with previous sessions. This helps users evaluate their body strain. Activity Rings can now be paused for set periods, allowing users to take breaks. Additionally, a new Vitals app offers a daily health status overview, including overnight health metrics.
Other notable additions include improved support during pregnancy, a more personalised Smart Stack, fresh watch faces, and a Translate app for the Watch. Users can also scroll through any app using a double-tap gesture on supported models.
Sleep Apnea Detection
While Sleep Apnea detection is part of watchOS 11, it is limited to the Watch Series 9, Watch Ultra 2, and the newly launched Watch Series 10. Older generation models receiving the OS update will not have access to this feature.
Apple mentioned that if signs of sleep apnea are detected, users will receive notifications. These notifications include when potential sleep apnea occurred and provide a PDF with three months of breathing disturbance data. This information is essential for obtaining a formal diagnosis from healthcare providers.
The introduction of these features aims to enhance user experience by offering more comprehensive health monitoring tools. By integrating advanced technology into everyday devices like watches, Apple continues to expand its role in personal health management.
