New UAE Research Highlights Airport Tech's Impact On Reducing Stress, Enhancing Travel Experience
As airports continue to evolve into more connected and engaging spaces, the integration of technology is playing a pivotal role in redefining the travel experience. With innovations aimed at enhancing efficiency, reducing stress, and providing valuable time savings, travelers are finding more reasons to enjoy and spend within airport confines.
Airports are transforming into dynamic spaces that offer much more than just a passageway for travelers. According to a study by Priority Pass, part of The Collinson Group, over 12,000 individuals shared their insights on how technological advancements are reshaping their airport experiences. This survey shed light on a strong desire among passengers for a journey that is not only less burdensome but also enriched with conveniences and memorable experiences.

In the UAE, a significant majority (79%) of travelers applaud the pace at which airports are integrating artificial intelligence and other technological innovations, contributing to a smoother and more pleasurable journey. A notable 81% of respondents highlighted that expedited security checks and digital boarding processes have significantly enhanced their travel experience, with automated luggage drop-offs and advanced security screenings also receiving high marks for their impact.
Priyanka Lakhani, Senior Vice President at Collinson International, pointed out, "Airports across the Middle East are leading the way in leveraging advanced technology to transform the passenger journey." She lauded major airports like Dubai International, Hamad International, and Abu Dhabi International for their pioneering efforts in creating seamless travel experiences through technology.
These efforts not only simplify routine procedures like security checks, but also afford travelers the luxury of time to indulge in premium airport offerings. The ambitious AED 128 billion project for Al Maktoum International Airport underscores the region's commitment to maintaining its leadership in global aviation.
The adoption of these technological innovations is proving to be a boon for time-saving as well. Approximately 46% of UAE travelers report saving between 10 and 30 minutes per journey, with 22% saving up to a full hour. The advantages extend beyond just time-saving, with many citing reduced stress and smoother journeys as significant benefits.
This newfound time and convenience allow travelers to immerse themselves fully in the airport experience. According to the survey, 60% of travelers worldwide, particularly among Gen Z and Millennials, are more inclined to spend at airports when automation is involved. This spending goes into dining, shopping, and enjoying lounge services, indicating a shift in how travelers perceive and utilize airport spaces.
Airport lounges and premium services are becoming integral to the travel experience, attracting 73% of global travelers at least once. Those who use lounges tend to spend more at airports, driven by the convenience offered by automation. Looking ahead, travelers are expressing a keen interest in lounges that feature more personalized services and tech-driven environments, as well as a demand for more diverse and locally-sourced dining options.
The Future: Smarter Tech, Human Touch
While the drive towards more technologically advanced and efficient airports is clear, the desire for human interaction remains. Despite the push for fully automated experiences, including biometric travel processes and smart baggage solutions, a significant portion of travelers still value human assistance, particularly in areas prone to emotional stress such as customer service, security, and lost and found services.
"With travel volumes continuing to rise, airports are looking to technology to help enhance the curb-to-gate journey whilst also increasing traveller spend," says Christopher Evans, CEO of Collinson International.
"Automation is freeing up valuable time, lowering stress levels and providing better information, in real time to the traveller. When the experience delivers, travellers are more inclined to explore places to relax, sample dining options or retail stores. From seamless lounge access to personalised digital services, at Priority Pass, we’re creating smarter, more rewarding travel experiences."
