AI Cameras Enhance Security At Cannes Film Festival Before Paris Olympics

The Cannes Film Festival, renowned for its glitz and glamour, is introducing an advanced security measure this year by deploying artificial intelligence (AI) technology. This initiative, considered a precursor to the upcoming Paris Olympics in July, aims to enhance safety for the 40,000 attendees expected to grace the French Riviera from Tuesday to May 25.

According to local authorities, 17 experimental cameras equipped with AI capabilities will be utilized to monitor for "events or behaviours deemed suspicious." These cameras are designed to aid in the detection of abandoned packages, weapons, and individuals in distress, marking a significant step forward in public security measures.

Mayor David Lisnard of Cannes highlighted that the implementation of these AI cameras has been in consideration since 2019. However, it was only possible to proceed with this initiative due to recent amendments in surveillance laws introduced in preparation for the Olympics. Lisnard also noted that Cannes boasts the "densest video protection network in France," with 884 cameras operational throughout the town, equating to one camera for every 84 residents.

In addition to the sophisticated camera network, Cannes has installed 462 emergency call buttons across various public spaces and buildings to further ensure the safety of festival-goers and residents alike. Despite initial concerns that the Olympics might divert vital police resources away from the festival, Paris authorities have committed to dispatching an additional 400 security forces to complement the 200 officers and 66 surveillance agents already stationed in Cannes.

The festival itself has taken robust security measures, with around 400 security guards deployed at the main venue, the Palais des Festivals. This is in addition to numerous private security agents assigned to oversee the myriad of beach, villa, and yacht parties that occur throughout the festival period.

This year's Cannes Film Festival not only promises an array of cinematic delights but also serves as a benchmark for the integration of AI in public security, potentially setting a new standard for future events of a similar scale, including the eagerly anticipated Paris Olympics.
