Galgotias University Defies Trends with Massive Leap in QS Asia Rankings
Galgotias University has bucked the national trend, advancing 32 spots in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2027 at a time when the majority of Indian institutions saw their positions decline. Now ranked 422nd in Asia and 104th in Southern Asia, the institution is pivoting its focus toward high-impact research that gains traction in the marketplace. Greater Noida, 5 November 2026: The QS World University Rankings: Asia 2027, published this week, evaluates 1,722 universities—an increase from 1,526 last year—and includes 195 new entrants. With 325 Indian institutions now ranked, the data shows that 71 percent of returning universities dropped in position, while 18 percent improved and 11 percent remained stable. Notably, all six of the nation’s top-ranked universities experienced a decline.
Against this backdrop, Galgotias University has surged 32 places to reach 422nd in Asia and climbed 12 spots to 104th in Southern Asia. This performance builds on a clear upward trajectory. In the 2025 edition, the University was positioned in the 621-640 band for Asia and 187th in Southern Asia. This marks the second major international ranking success in just over a month. Following the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, published on 30 September, Galgotias improved its national standing by 24 places, moving from 65th to 41st, and advanced from 27th to 20th among private institutions, while shifting from the 1201-1500 global band to 1001-1200. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, it now sits in the 1201-1400 global band, ranking 16th among private universities and 46th among all universities in India. The University credits this achievement to the collective efforts of its faculty, researchers, students, staff, and alumni.
Commenting on the rankings, Dr Dhruv Galgotia, Chief Executive Officer, Galgotias University, said, "A rise of 32 places in Asia, after 24 places in India in THE, tells us we are moving in the right direction, and I want to acknowledge everyone whose work made that possible. But a ranking is not the finish line. We want research that other scholars rely on, innovations that leave the laboratory, create value and generate employment, and international and industry partnerships that open real opportunities for our students. That is the standard we are setting for ourselves." Rankings provide only a partial view, and the University is transparent about its areas for development. Currently, its research portfolio includes 9,957 Scopus-indexed publications, 80,859 citations, and an h-index of 104. The primary objective is to increase citation counts, which measure how frequently other scholars utilize and build upon the University’s work—a common hurdle across India, where only three universities feature in Asia’s top 50 for citations per paper. Regarding the publications analyzed, 56.6 percent are featured in Q1 and Q2 journals, representing the top half of journals in their respective fields. The University aims to increase this proportion, recognizing that volume alone is insufficient; the true measure of success is the utility and reliability of its research for the global academic community. Reputation is another key focus. Since academic and employer reputation account for a significant portion of the Asia ranking, the University is committed to enhancing the visibility and consistency of its work. Additionally, it seeks to deepen the doctoral expertise of its faculty and elevate the quality of individual research outputs. The University is also prioritizing the practical application of its research. It aims to move more innovations from the laboratory to commercialization, fostering value creation and job growth. The necessary infrastructure is already in place: a INR 350 crore investment in AI, an NVIDIA DGX H200 system for research and student projects, and a semiconductor research lab established alongside a Centre of Excellence with Microchip Technology India. With over 135 startups incubated on campus—several of which are already revenue-generating—and collaborative green hydrogen research initiatives with Yamanashi Prefecture and the University of Yamanashi, the foundation for real-world impact is solid. Strengthening international and industry ties is another strategic pillar. QS data highlights a strong foundation, with rankings for international students, faculty, and exchange programs (between 219th and 279th in Asia) outperforming the University’s overall rank. The goal now is to replicate this success in international research collaboration and employer perception. Having established agreements in Italy, Thailand, Japan, and Vietnam, and working with partners like Accenture, Tata Technologies, and Apple, the University is focused on converting these relationships into tangible outcomes. This includes joint publications, faculty exchanges, and deeper industry involvement in curriculum, research, and recruitment to ensure employers directly experience the caliber of Galgotias graduates. In the coming year, the University will concentrate on rigorous research standards, increasing its presence in Q1 and Q2 journals, enhancing faculty doctoral qualifications, supporting the commercialization of innovations, fostering international research partnerships, and deepening industry engagement. It remains committed to reporting its progress, including areas where it seeks to improve.
