Oman Hosts Virtual Meeting To Prepare For The 7th Session Of The UN Environment Assembly In Nairobi

The Sultanate of Oman, through its Environment Authority, organised a virtual meeting to prepare for the 7th United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7). This assembly is set to occur in Nairobi, Kenya, from 8-12 December 2025. Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, led the session.

Participants examined the draft ministerial declaration for UNEA-7. This declaration focuses on promoting sustainable solutions to global issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The draft guide for submitting resolutions by member states was also reviewed.

The meeting explored a concept note about organising a day dedicated to multilateral environmental agreements. This initiative aims to enhance their role and improve coordination among stakeholders. The session also discussed organisational arrangements and proposed topics for leadership dialogues during the assembly.

A draft communication strategy was reviewed to highlight the assembly’s themes and raise awareness of environmental issues. This strategy aims to ensure that the assembly's objectives are well communicated and understood by all participants.

On the sidelines, a virtual dialogue session involved representatives from major groups and stakeholders. Their input was gathered to ensure decisions reflect civil society perspectives. This inclusive approach aims to make UNEA-7 more representative of diverse viewpoints.

The meeting included several ministers, ambassadors, members of the assembly’s Bureau, and Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme. Their participation underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing environmental challenges.

This preparatory meeting is a crucial step towards ensuring UNEA-7's success. By fostering dialogue and knowledge exchange among stakeholders, it aims to strengthen international efforts in tackling environmental issues effectively.
