Riyadh, SPA – A historic moment unfolded last Thursday at the King Fahd Cultural Center in Riyadh with the premiere of "Zarqa al-Yamamah," marking Saudi Arabia's first grand opera performed entirely in Arabic. This cultural milestone, narrating the tale of Zarqa, a blue-eyed seer from the Jadis tribe of the pre-Islamic era, captivated audiences with its portrayal of a foretold devastating raid on her people. The Theatre and Performing Arts Commission spearheaded this ambitious project, blending Saudi creativity with global artistic prowess.

The opera's narrative, penned by award-winning Saudi poet Saleh Zamanan, comes to life with music composed by Australian Lee Bradshaw and direction by Swiss Daniele Finzi Pasca. The Dresdner Sinfoniker Orchestra and the Czech Philharmonic Choir lend their musical talents to this production, creating a mesmerizing auditory experience. Fashion designer Giovanna Buzzi and her team crafted costumes that visually transport audiences back to the pre-Islamic era, enhancing the storytelling with authentic visual aesthetics.
