Youth 4 Sustainability Launches Beyond Borders Programme To Empower Young Leaders Globally

Youth 4 Sustainability (Y4S), a global initiative by Masdar, aims to empower young leaders in sustainability. Its new programme, Beyond Borders, extends learning beyond classrooms for real-world impact. The first edition gathered ten young changemakers in Malaysia for five days of workshops, field activities, and digital storytelling.

Participants from the UAE, Malaysia, Germany, Egypt, Algeria, Yemen, and India engaged with Malaysia’s energy stakeholders. They visited Tenaga Nasional Berhad to understand the national power infrastructure and strategies for renewable energy transition. This provided a comprehensive view of Malaysia’s energy transformation efforts.

Beyond Borders Programme Empowers Young Leaders

The programme offered practical experience while promoting cross-cultural understanding and leadership development. Participants tackled real-world energy challenges and created narrative-based case studies linking people, policy, and technology. This approach helped them gain insights into sustainable solutions.

At Universiti Tenaga Nasional, an interactive workshop on inclusive energy systems was held. Through design challenges and innovation labs, participants explored solutions connecting local realities with global sustainability goals. This hands-on experience enhanced their understanding of sustainable practices.

The programme concluded with a youth showcase where participants presented group outcomes and proposed local energy solutions. This event allowed Future Sustainability Leaders to demonstrate practical ideas and reinforced their role as drivers of positive change in energy transformation.

Narmeen Almarzooqi, a participant, expressed her enthusiasm: "Experiencing Malaysia’s energy landscape firsthand through site visits, community engagement, and storytelling has further strengthened my passion for sustainability." Her statement highlights the impact of experiential learning on fostering global energy transformation.

Long-Term Impact and Future Prospects

The influence of Beyond Borders Malaysia extends beyond the five-day event. Participants will apply their learning to projects in their home countries while leveraging new networks to advance innovation. For Y4S, this programme strengthens partnerships with academic and industry stakeholders in Southeast Asia.

Zainab Al Ali from Masdar stated: "Beyond Borders Malaysia has set a new benchmark for Y4S in delivering impact at scale." This underscores Y4S’s role in preparing youth to shape policy and lead global energy transformation efforts effectively.

Y4S participants included Matar AlSuwaidi, Shaqra Al Tamimi, Narmeen Almarzooqi, Ahmed Almheiri, Saleh AlShamsi, Doaa AlAlimi, Arvid Leonard Ehlert, Habibalrahman Hassan, Maria Benkhalifa and Navya Garg. This diverse group combined technical skills with policy insight to promote a just regional energy transformation.
