Gabon's Young Mahdi Impresses At King Abdulaziz Quran Memorization Contest
Mahdi, a 12-year-old from Gabon, recently took part in the 44th King Abdulaziz International Holy Quran Competition for Memorization, Recital, and Explanation. This achievement comes just two years after he embraced Islam. Mahdi is currently the only Muslim in his family and stands out as one of the youngest participants in the competition.
Zakaria, who has been Mahdi’s mentor and guide, witnessed Mahdi’s heartfelt shahada (declaration of faith). Zakaria recalls Mahdi’s journey with Islam and his rapid progress in Qur'anic studies. He served as an imam in a mosque near Mahdi’s home and remembers his initial confusion when Mahdi visited him one evening with his younger brother, expressing a desire to convert to Islam.

"I initially thought he was jesting," Zakaria reflects, noting how the situation took him by surprise due to Mahdi's young age at the time. "I asked him if he knew anything about Islam. He repeatedly insisted that he wanted to embrace the religion of Allah. In my heart, I said, 'This is a gift from Allah,'" Zakaria says.
Zakaria guided Mahdi through the shahada and witnessed his conversion. He expresses gratitude for the divine guidance that led Mahdi to Islam. Besides helping Mahdi embrace Islam, Zakaria also renamed him from Midi to Mahdi. He then began teaching him the Arabic alphabet and short Qur'anic surahs (chapters), eventually helping him memorize a quarter of the Quran.
"I observed his swift pace of memorization and understanding, as he memorizes a page of the Quran daily, starting just a week post-conversion," Zakaria remarks. Amidst Mahdi's impressive feats, including memorizing various Islamic literary works like *Tuhfatul Atfaal* (The Children's Bequest), Zakaria marvels at the unique qualities displayed by the young learner.
A Unique Young Learner
"He stands out as a unique young man, unlike any I had ever seen," Zakaria says. "Glory to the One who bestows upon His servants what He wills," Zakaria concludes.
Mahdi’s dedication and rapid progress in Qur'anic studies have made him an exceptional participant in this prestigious competition. His story is not only inspiring but also highlights the profound impact of faith and mentorship on young minds.
