Saudi Arabia's Minister Of Culture Announces 2025 As The Year Of Handicrafts To Celebrate Cultural Heritage

The Saudi Cabinet has designated 2025 as the "Year of Handicrafts," a decision praised by Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan. This initiative underscores the cultural importance of handicrafts in Saudi Arabia, highlighting the creativity and skill of local artisans. The move aims to showcase Saudi craftsmanship on a global stage, celebrating its unique contributions to culture.

Prince Badr expressed his gratitude to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their steadfast support of arts and culture. Their backing has strengthened Saudi cultural roots and allowed the world to appreciate its distinct elements. He stated: "At the Ministry of Culture, we are working to instill pride in our national identity and all its associated cultural elements, whether tangible or intangible."

2025 Declared Year of Handicrafts in Saudi Arabia

The "Year of Handicrafts" initiative aligns with the objectives of the National Culture Strategy under Saudi Vision 2030. This strategy prioritises national identity and Saudi culture as key goals. Prince Badr emphasised that this initiative will celebrate an essential component of cultural value, which is central to national identity.

Saudi handicrafts encompass a wide range of creative expressions, including textiles, pottery, clothing, beadwork, copper products, sewing, dyeing, blacksmithing, gold and jewellery making. These crafts have been passed down through generations, reflecting the creativity inherent in Saudi society.

The Ministry of Culture plans to enhance the visibility of Saudi handicrafts both domestically and internationally during 2025. This effort will enable artisans to present their work at various events worldwide. The initiative also seeks to boost the economic contribution of handicrafts within the local economy.

Raising awareness about the cultural, historical, civilisational, and economic significance of these crafts is another goal. By doing so, it aims to foster appreciation for these traditional arts that form a cornerstone of Saudi heritage.

Prince Badr highlighted: "This is one of the objectives of the National Culture Strategy, under Saudi Vision 2030." The strategy's ambitious goals include elevating national identity through cultural initiatives like this one.

The year-long celebration will not only honour traditional crafts but also promote them as vital components of Saudi Arabia's rich cultural tapestry. By showcasing these crafts globally, it hopes to attract interest and investment in this sector.

This initiative represents a significant step towards recognising and preserving the artistic heritage that defines Saudi Arabia's unique cultural landscape. It aims to ensure that future generations continue to value and engage with these traditional crafts.
