Yahsat Group CEO Announces Space42 Creation From Bayanat Merger, Signalling Major UAE Space Sector Shift

In a significant move that marks a new era in the space technology and artificial intelligence (AI) sector in the UAE and the broader Middle East North Africa (MENA) region, Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of the Yahsat Group, announced the merger with Bayanat to form Space42. This newly established entity is poised to become a global leader in AI-powered space technology and geospatial solutions, boasting a market value exceeding AED15 billion (US$4 billion).

The announcement came after shareholders greenlit the proposed merger during a general assembly meeting. Al Hashemi highlighted that this strategic union would merge the strengths and experiences of both companies within a competitive and sustainable framework. This collaboration is set to accelerate their growth trajectory, aligning with the objectives of the National Space Strategy 2030 and the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031.

Space42 Emerges from Yahsat-Bayanat Merger

Space42 aims to capitalize on local, regional, and international opportunities in space technology, geospatial solutions, and intelligent business analysis. The merger is expected to fortify Space42's financial position and technological capabilities, significantly supported by AI. It promises to offer innovative space technology services and solutions with substantial economic and societal benefits.

The combined efforts of Yahsat and Bayanat are anticipated to yield significant growth potential both regionally and internationally. This is underscored by their combined revenues of AED2.8 billion and a net income of AED639 million, according to the latest financial results for 2023.

Yahsat has already embarked on an ambitious Direct-2-Device (D2D) strategy since February 2023, aiming to enhance global connectivity. This strategy allows smartphone users and IoT devices worldwide to access spacetech services directly, irrespective of their geographical location. The D2D communication strategy is set to unfold in two phases, with initial offerings including voice and messaging capabilities this year. Subsequent expansions will introduce texting and IoT functionalities on smartphones by 2025, utilizing Yahsat’s Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites.

Furthermore, Project BlueStar represents the second phase of Yahsat's D2D strategy. This initiative seeks to establish a scalable and sustainable satellite network that supports comprehensive D2D communication capabilities.

The formation of Space42 underlines a strategic pivot towards integrating AI with space technology to create transformative solutions. This merger not only signifies a substantial leap forward for the UAE's ambitions in space technology but also sets a benchmark for innovation in the global arena.
