Xposure 2025 Examines How Technology Transforms Modern Storytelling And Creativity

Storytelling was the focal point at the International Photography Festival (Xposure) 2025, where two panel discussions delved into technology's impact on modern narratives. Industry experts examined how artificial intelligence (AI), virtual production, and interactivity are transforming storytelling, while also emphasising the enduring influence of human creativity.

Technological advancements have broken down traditional barriers, making storytelling tools more accessible. Director Siraj Jhaveri noted this shift: "In the past, you needed funding, equipment, and industry connections to be a commercial director. Today, with Unreal Engine and AI tools, anyone with a vision can create and share their story." Arthur Baum, a Director of Photography and Unreal Engine artist, shared similar views: "As an artist, I feel reborn. There are no more boundaries to telling the stories I want, all from the comfort of my living room."

Xposure 2025 Explores Technology in Storytelling

The panelists discussed AI's dual role in innovation and ethical concerns. Yohan Wadia highlighted its transformative potential: "AI isn’t just about speed; it’s about accessibility. I can now pitch concepts with visuals that are 60% realised before production even begins." However, ethical issues were also raised. Santiago Lyon stressed transparency: "AI-generated content should be clearly labelled—just as genetically modified foods are. Without proper disclosures, we risk misleading audiences and eroding public trust."

Despite technological advances, storytelling remains inherently human. Baum questioned AI's ability to replicate human connection: "We can create AI-generated characters, but can we create a soul? Personal connection is irreplaceable." Glenn Gainor reflected on Hollywood's growing interest in the Middle East as a filmmaking hub. He recalled his experience: "The first film I brought to the UAE was Deliver Us from Evil. At the time, nobody was using the 30% tax credit for Hollywood productions."

Regional Storytelling Potential

Oscar-winning filmmaker Travon Free highlighted regional storytelling's untapped potential: "It’s inspiring to see the hunger here for stories that haven’t been told as often as they should. The world is ready for these narratives." Streaming platforms have reshaped storytelling methods. Gainor observed that romantic comedies thrive on platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime rather than theatres.

Free pointed out YouTube's disruptive role: "It’s now the most-watched streaming platform on TV screens, not just phones. Great stories can succeed anywhere." While technology has democratised filmmaking, Free warned against over-reliance on it: "Skipping the fundamentals of storytelling and jumping straight to AI tools is dangerous. Without core storytelling principles, you risk creating hollow content."

Jhaveri added that emotional connection is crucial in filmmaking: "A great film makes the audience feel something. It’s not just about aesthetics or special effects—it’s about emotional connection." Gainor cited an Oscar-nominated documentary made entirely from found footage as an example of compelling storytelling without traditional elements.

Gainor reminded attendees that despite industry changes, core storytelling principles remain constant: "No matter how the industry evolves, the fundamentals don’t change. A great story, well told, will always find an audience." As Xposure 2025 continues to celebrate visual storytelling with over 300 photographers exhibiting their work and hosting workshops, it highlights narrative innovation's limitless potential in expanding how we tell—and experience—stories.
