Xposure 2025 Explores The Role Of Documentaries As A Force For Change In Society
Documentaries continue to be a vital medium for raising awareness and fostering change, especially in a world where divisions are growing and media is becoming more fragmented. At the 9th International Photography Festival (Xposure), the panel discussion titled "Filmmaking for Change: Documentaries That Matter" delved into this significant impact.
French filmmaker Jerome Pin, known for his work in war zones and environmental crises, highlighted the importance of giving a voice to the voiceless. He stated, "Testimony is key. My job is to give light to those who don’t have a voice." Reflecting on his early career, Pin shared an experience from documenting refugees after the Rwandan genocide. Faced with a moral dilemma while witnessing 400,000 people crossing the Congo wilderness, he initially helped UNICEF with logistics but soon realised his responsibility was to document the events for global awareness.

Financing remains a significant hurdle for impactful documentaries. Photojournalist Rick Smolan, renowned for his Day in the Life photography books, shared his strategy for overcoming this challenge. When traditional publishers rejected his ideas, he turned to corporate sponsors. By offering them visibility without editorial control, he secured resources while maintaining integrity. Once projects were completed, these sponsors became enthusiastic promoters of his work.
Dennis Schmelz, known for highlighting hidden destinations through his lens, discussed how he transitioned from tourism-focused projects to more meaningful storytelling. Initially working in tourism and selling dreams, Schmelz felt something was missing. A commercial train project in India inspired him to create a short film that highlighted stark socioeconomic contrasts. This personal project unexpectedly went viral on YouTube, resonating with nearly half a million viewers.
Schmelz emphasised that authenticity is crucial when creating films about social issues. He noted that if filmmakers pursue projects solely for clicks, it becomes evident to audiences. However, when filmmakers genuinely care about their cause, it resonates with viewers on a deeper level.
Smolan acknowledged the challenges faced by younger filmmakers today due to platforms like TikTok that cater to short attention spans. He argued that social change cannot occur through brief clips; long-form documentaries still hold significant power in driving change.
Xposure 2025 is organised by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau and is being held at Aljada in Sharjah until 26th February.
