WTO Conference Delivers Significant Wins For Developing Nations, Says Director-General

In a recent interaction with the Emirates News Agency (WAM), WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala lauded the successful execution of the Thirteenth WTO Ministerial Conference, attributing its success to the meticulous organization by the UAE and the effective chairmanship of His Excellency, Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade. The conference, which concluded in Abu Dhabi, was marked by significant decisions that promise to bolster global trade, particularly benefiting developing and least developed countries.

Okonjo-Iweala expressed gratitude towards the UAE government and Dr. Al Zeyoudi for their roles in facilitating a productive meeting despite challenges. The conference's outcomes were seen as a positive step forward, with some negotiating files being closed and substantial progress made on issues critical to developing nations. However, the Director-General also acknowledged that some files remain open, with continued efforts needed in Geneva.

WTO's Big Wins for Developing Countries

One of the pivotal achievements of the WTO 13th Ministerial Conference was the approval of an extension to the TRIPS Waiver. This decision enables developing countries to enhance their vaccine production capacities for COVID-19 and future pandemics, addressing a crucial need highlighted by the global health crisis.

Furthermore, the conference underscored the commitment to reforming the Dispute Settlement System (DSS) by the end of 2024. This reform aims at creating a system that is comprehensive, effective, and accessible to all WTO members. The final statement from the conference called for inclusive and transparent discussions to build on existing progress and tackle challenges, particularly those associated with the Appellate Body.

Another significant resolution was the extension of a moratorium on e-commerce tariffs until the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference in 2026. This decision reflects the extensive negotiations and efforts undertaken during the conference to address key issues affecting global trade's future.

The outcomes of the Thirteenth WTO Ministerial Conference in Abu Dhabi signify important steps towards enhancing global trade frameworks, with a focus on inclusivity and development. The successful organization by the UAE and effective leadership during the conference have been pivotal in achieving these results, setting a positive precedent for future WTO meetings.
