MV Höegh Sunrise: The World's Largest Green Vehicle Carrier Makes Historic Call At Jebel Ali Port

The MV Höegh Sunrise, the world's largest eco-friendly carrier, recently docked at Jebel Ali Port. This Aurora-class vessel is pioneering in the automotive shipping industry with its zero-carbon ready design. It can operate on future fuels like ammonia and methanol, significantly reducing carbon emissions per car by 58% compared to current standards. The ship arrived from Europe carrying 1,200 vehicles.

A ceremony marked this significant event at Jebel Ali Port. Ahmed Badri, Vice President of General Cargo & RoRo at DP World GCC, and Atanu Maiti, Regional Head of Commercial Operations at Höegh Autoliners for the Middle East, Africa, India, and Europe attended. This milestone highlights the port's role in sustainable shipping.

Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World GCC, stated that the arrival of the Höegh Sunrise underscores Dubai's position as a global automotive hub. He noted that handling such advanced carriers supports greener supply chains and benefits over 940 automotive companies based in Jafza.

Andreas Enger, CEO of Höegh Autoliners, emphasized the Aurora-class's role in promoting sustainable shipping. He highlighted that partnerships with key hubs like Jebel Ali are crucial for achieving their goals. This collaboration ensures customers can transport cargo reliably while minimizing their carbon footprint.

DP World has seen a record increase in vehicle handling in Dubai. In 2024 alone, they managed 1.3 million vehicles, marking a 53.6% rise from the previous year. This growth reflects Dubai's expanding influence in global automotive trade.

To accommodate rising demand at Jebel Ali Port, DP World expanded its logistics capacity in August this year. They launched a new 2.6 million square foot vehicle storage yard at Terminal 4 and are developing a massive auto market spanning 20 million square feet.

This expansion aligns with Dubai's vision to enhance its role in international trade while supporting environmental sustainability through innovative solutions like those offered by the MV Höegh Sunrise.
