World Police Summit 2025 Addresses Drug Trafficking, Cybercrime, And Aviation Security Challenges

The World Police Summit 2025 in Dubai brought together global law enforcement leaders and security experts to tackle pressing issues like drug trafficking, cybercrime, and aviation security. The event, themed "Beyond the Badge: Envision the Next Era of Policing," included four specialised conferences and 12 main security tracks. Topics ranged from cybercrime and drug control to border security and human trafficking.

During a cybersecurity session, Dr. Mohammed Hamad Al Kuwaiti, Chairman of the UAE Cybersecurity Council, introduced the national "Cyber Pulse" initiative. This initiative aims to empower society as the first line of defence in 2025, dubbed the "Year of Community." Dr. Al Kuwaiti emphasised equipping tech professionals and youth with skills to combat cyber threats in the Fifth Industrial Revolution era.

Dr. Al Kuwaiti also highlighted technology's dual nature: a valuable asset when used responsibly but a potential threat if misused. He discussed proactive measures across the UAE to detect, monitor, and neutralise cyberattacks swiftly. These efforts aim to safeguard against emerging threats in an increasingly digital world.

A session titled "Public Order and Crowd Control: Intelligence-Led Security for International Events" focused on integrating intelligence, planning, and operations for managing international events effectively. This approach is crucial for maintaining public order during large gatherings.

A compelling session on drug enforcement began with a documentary outlining four anti-narcotics pillars: prevention, treatment, early detection, and global cooperation. Angela Me from the UNODC shared alarming statistics: over 100 million people use illicit drugs, with new trafficking routes emerging in South Asia and Africa.

Synthetic drugs pose a growing threat due to their low cost and adaptability. Me called for unified global surveys to monitor consumption trends and urged enhanced collaboration between international law enforcement bodies to dismantle cross-border networks effectively.

Aviation Security Concerns

In a session on aviation security titled "Counterterrorism and Emerging Threats," Europol Commissioner Peter Nilsson highlighted risks like insider threats, drone attacks, sabotage, and laser interference with pilots. With over 400 commercial airports in Europe alone, he stressed collaboration and clear regulations are essential for safety.

Nilsson stated that every staff member must be cyber-aware to improve emergency responses significantly during crises. Clearly defined roles can enhance operational continuity in aviation security.

Combatting Cross-Border Cybercrime

A high-level session on "Combatting Cross-Border Cybercrime" featured experts from UNODC, FBI, CyberPeace Foundation (India), and Nigerian Police. Discussions centred on unified global strategies to overcome legal jurisdiction conflicts, privacy concerns, evidence collection challenges, and evolving cyberattack methods.

The summit was hosted by Dubai Police in partnership with DXB Live and supported by key global entities like IACP, UNODC, and Europol. It also featured an exhibition with over 170 international exhibitors showcasing innovations in policing technology.
