World Local Production Forum 2023 Concludes In Abu Dhabi With Focus On Health Equity And Innovation

The World Local Production Forum's third edition concluded in Abu Dhabi, focusing on "Advancing Local Production for Health Equity, Global Health Security and Sustainable Development." Held from 7th to 9th April, the event gathered government officials, industry leaders, and stakeholders globally. The forum aimed to strengthen local pharmaceutical production and healthcare systems.

Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE's Minister of State for Foreign Trade and Chairman of the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE), highlighted the nation's commitment to enhancing local pharmaceutical production. He stated that the UAE is becoming a global hub for pharmaceutical innovation and advanced healthcare technologies. Emphasising local production as a strategic priority, he said it supports both healthcare and economic development.

"We are pleased to host this global forum in partnership with the World Health Organisation, reflecting the UAE's deep commitment to expanding local manufacturing capabilities, supporting research and development systems, and maintaining the highest quality standards in the production and distribution of medical products," Dr. Al Zeyoudi stated. He also noted that integrating modern technologies like AI and big data into healthcare production aligns with environmental sustainability goals.

Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, Director-General of EDE, stressed that the UAE is setting an example by building resilient pharmaceutical ecosystems. "Hosting the World Local Production Forum is a testament to the UAE's progress in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector," she said. She believes investing in local capabilities ensures health security and equitable access to treatments.

Dr. Yukiko Nakatani from WHO remarked on the forum's timing amid global challenges in accessing essential health products. "Strengthening local production is a foundational pillar for building more resilient healthcare systems," she said, citing the UAE as a model with its comprehensive approach.

The forum featured discussions on policies for strengthening local production systems, innovative financing strategies, promoting research across the pharmaceutical value chain, and pandemic preparedness through expanded manufacturing capacity.

Strategic Vision for Health Innovation

Dr. Asma Ibrahim Al Mannaei from Abu Dhabi's Department of Health presented their strategic vision for health innovation. She highlighted initiatives like regulatory modernisation and data-driven health solutions. During COVID-19, Abu Dhabi was ranked as the most resilient city in pandemic crisis management.

The UAE showcased its logistical excellence by managing over 260 million vaccine doses globally during the pandemic. This effort demonstrated its commitment to global solidarity and effective crisis management.

Collaborative Efforts

Dr. Al Kaabi participated in a panel titled "Localising Pharmaceutical Innovation," which included members from PharmaGroup and Mycomed Association. She shared EDE's vision to position UAE as a centre for pharmaceutical innovation by attracting talent and investment.

During her visit to ADCAN Pharma's facility, Dr. Al Kaabi discussed enhancing collaboration to support local pharmaceutical manufacturing growth. The focus was on reinforcing national capabilities and fostering innovation across production chains.

The forum saw participation from 4,077 individuals across 141 countries, including 16 ministers and over 229 international speakers from various sectors.
