World Economic Forum Recognises Dubai's Innovative Approach To Securing Emerging Technologies
The World Economic Forum (WEF) recently recognised the Dubai Electronic Security Center's (DESC) role in securing emerging technologies. DESC has been pivotal in integrating these technologies into Dubai's digital infrastructure and deploying them safely across various economic sectors. The study, "Navigating Cyber Resilience in the Age of Emerging Technologies," highlighted Dubai's use of artificial intelligence, blockchain, quantum computing, and smart city initiatives in government services, communications, manufacturing, transport, and urban planning.
Dubai's achievements align with the nation's vision to promote innovation and resilience within its digital framework. This vision is supported by specialised government entities led by DESC. The Dubai Cyber Security Strategy, managed by DESC, is crucial for encouraging innovation while safeguarding digital assets. The UAE has strengthened its leadership through national strategies like the UAE National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031 and significant investments in advanced technologies such as quantum computing, 5G communications, IoT, and autonomous mobility.

Partnerships with research institutions and stakeholders from both public and private sectors have been established to create regulatory frameworks for safe technology adoption. These collaborations extend locally and globally to ensure comprehensive security measures are in place. DESC has launched several policies, including the Dubai AI Security Policy and the world's first autonomous vehicle security specification. Additionally, the RZAM cybersecurity application uses AI to protect internet users from malicious sites in real-time.
Yousuf Hamad Al Shaibani, CEO of DESC, stated: "The Center’s contributions to securing emerging technologies align with its vision to make Dubai digitally the safest city in the world. Therefore, the Center continues to coordinate with governmental, regional, and international entities to study the security requirements of modern and emerging technologies and set standards and controls that ensure their safe adoption across various sectors."
Focus on AI and Connected Vehicles
Recently, DESC released a study on connected vehicles within the Internet of Things applications in transport. This study outlined necessary security specifications for these vehicles. It supports Dubai’s Self-Driving Transport (SDT) Strategy aiming for 25% self-driving transportation by 2030. With AI expected to contribute US$320 billion to the UAE economy by 2030, DESC issued a detailed study on leveraging AI across various sectors in Dubai.
This study analysed current AI capabilities and estimated their economic impact on Dubai's growth. It also discussed societal considerations and risks associated with widespread AI adoption while exploring ways to enhance collaboration among stakeholders in Dubai's AI landscape.
The efforts of DESC reflect a commitment to making Dubai a leader in secure technology integration while fostering an environment conducive to technological advancement. By establishing robust frameworks and partnerships, Dubai aims to maintain its position at the forefront of digital innovation globally.
