World Arabic Language Day Celebrations In Sharjah Highlight Cultural Significance Of Arabic Language
The World Arabic Language Day was celebrated at the Sharjah-based Arabic Language Educational Centre for the Gulf States (ALECGS) under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. This annual event, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, aligns with UNESCO's directives and the "Arabia" plan to promote Arabic culture. It highlights the leadership's commitment to celebrating Arabic's rich heritage and its contributions to civilisation.
The celebration commenced with the UAE national anthem and verses from the Holy Quran. Dr. Issa Al Hammadi, Director of ALECGS, welcomed attendees and praised Gulf leaders' efforts in promoting the Arabic language. He emphasised that establishing the Educational Centre demonstrates their dedication. Dr. Al Hammadi also acknowledged Sharjah's pioneering initiatives in safeguarding and advancing Arabic, stating, "On this day, we celebrate the UAE's remarkable contributions, which have elevated Arabic to a distinguished position."

Dr. Abdulaziz Abdulrahman Almusallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, delivered a keynote speech highlighting the importance of preserving Arab cultural heritage. He stressed that maintaining and affirming Arab identity relies heavily on the Arabic language. Through these efforts, the UAE continues its mission to nurture and celebrate Arabic, ensuring its vibrant legacy endures for future generations.
Dr. Mohamed Safi Al Mosteghanemi, Secretary General of the Arabic Language Academy (ALA) in Sharjah, spoke about Arabic's role in transmitting knowledge and culture. He highlighted the Academy's efforts in preserving and developing the language across various fields. The Academy supports initiatives enhancing Arabic's status both locally and internationally.
A visual presentation showcased ALECGS’s achievements in conferences, training programmes, research, and student competitions in poetry and storytelling. Dr. Al Hammadi announced new publications for 2024 focusing on developing proficiency tests in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These initiatives aim to enhance curricula to keep pace with modern advancements.
The event concluded by recognising participants in a programme themed "Arabic Language and Artificial Intelligence: Fostering Innovation While Preserving Cultural Heritage." Several experts in Arabic language, heritage, and culture participated in this forum organised by ALECGS.
A visual presentation titled "The Story of World Arabic Language Day," prepared by ALECGS, was also showcased during the event. This presentation highlighted significant milestones achieved by ALECGS over time.
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi’s support underscores his dedication to preserving and enriching Arabic through numerous institutions like the Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language. The UAE remains committed to restoring Arabic's historical status in science and cultural exchange.
