EU High Representative Josep Borrell Warns Of Imminent Conflagration In The Middle East
The Middle East is teetering on the brink of widespread conflict, with global powers seemingly unable to intervene effectively. Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, expressed grave concerns about the escalating situation. "The people in the region are more insecure than ever and are caught in an unending cycle of violence, hatred, and revenge," he stated.
Borrell highlighted that civilians are bearing the brunt of the violence sweeping across the Middle East. He stressed that military actions will not secure a future for Israelis and Palestinians. "No military solution will bring a future to the people of Israel and Palestine. Only a political solution will bring peace, security and prosperity," he emphasised.

The EU believes that an immediate ceasefire is crucial to resolving the crisis. Borrell noted that halting hostilities is essential for freeing hostages and reducing tensions in this volatile region. The EU fears that continued conflict could have severe global repercussions.
Efforts by the EU to support Palestinians have been significant, focusing on humanitarian aid to address dire needs such as food shortages and lack of vaccinations for children. However, Borrell lamented that these efforts often face obstacles. "Unfortunately, that aid does not always reach those in need, and in too many cases it has been obstructed and impeded," he said.
The EU has consistently cautioned against excessive force that violates International Humanitarian Law. This warning applies even when combating terrorism or exercising self-defence rights. The EU insists on adherence to these laws at all times.
Borrell concluded by affirming the EU's commitment to diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving conflicts in the region. "The EU will continue to work tirelessly to pave the way for diplomacy on various fronts," he stated.
