World Economic Forum In Riyadh: Uniting For Global Growth And Sustainable Solutions

The World Economic Forum (WEF) is set to host a pivotal Special Meeting on Global Collaboration, Growth, and Energy for Development in Saudi Arabia, scheduled for April 28-29. This gathering aims to unite 1,000 leaders from 92 countries in a concerted effort to tackle pressing global challenges through sustainable and collaborative solutions. The agenda is structured around three core themes: inclusive growth, energy for development, and revitalizing global collaboration.

Amid escalating geopolitical tensions and widening socio-economic disparities, the meeting seeks to enhance international cooperation and dialogue. This initiative is crucial for bolstering humanitarian efforts and mitigating the adverse effects of global instability. Participants will deliberate on strategies to fortify the global economy by fostering stronger ties between the Global North and South.

Over 220 public figures, including prominent political leaders and representatives from key international organizations, are slated to attend. Among the notable attendees are Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State; Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy; and Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.

The convening is timely, aligning with the critical junctures identified in the World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report 2024. The report outlines imminent threats such as economic downturns, inflation, disrupted supply chains, extreme weather conditions, and conflicts expected to prevail over the next two years. It also forecasts that issues like climate change, technological advancements, migration, and societal polarization will become more pronounced over the coming decade.

The forum is committed to facilitating meaningful dialogue across business sectors, government bodies, and civil society. It emphasizes inclusive discussions with significant representation from the Global South and emerging economies. Accessibility to the discussions will be broadened through livestreaming of 50 sessions covering diverse topics like global development, energy transition, and sustainable growth. An Open Forum will also feature panel discussions that bridge thought leaders with local communities. Additionally, the meeting will address regional conflicts and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Significant progress is anticipated in several WEF initiatives during this meeting. Noteworthy among these are the Future of Growth Initiative and the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. New insights on education and AI, cybersecurity talent, and geopolitical dependencies on hydrocarbons and critical minerals are expected to be unveiled. The overarching goal of these discussions is to transform innovative ideas into practical solutions that can be scaled globally to address these challenges.
