WCR 2024 Highlights Empowerment And Social Security In Rehabilitation Efforts

The World Congress on Rehabilitation 2024 continued its momentum on the second day, gathering experts in rights and inclusion. The event featured sessions focusing on social security's role and international collaboration. The day began with a conference led by Dr. Mohammed Azman, President of the International Social Security Association (ISSA), highlighting social security's importance in rehabilitation.

Dr. Susanne Weinbrenner from German Pension Insurance stressed the vital role of social security in her keynote speech. She discussed how demographic changes, economic conditions, and global crises challenge the stability of this framework, which is crucial for effective rehabilitation. Perspectives from Zambia, Germany, and Canada were also shared during the event.

Empowerment and Social Security at WCR 2024

A seminar titled "Belt and Road" focused on cooperation between China and Arabian countries. Chinese corporations showcased innovative solutions to assist people of determination. Abdullah Al-Humaidan from the Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination emphasised involving individuals with disabilities in society to empower them as contributors to the UAE’s economy.

Patrick Siampwili, CEO of Zambia's Workers’ Compensation Fund Board, highlighted incentives for employers to include persons with disabilities in the workforce. He stated, "We need to see policy alignment to ensure that rehabilitation services are embedded with employee work benefit packages," reflecting on policy discussions in Zambia.

Dr. Stefan Hussy from German Social Accident Insurance chaired a discussion on best practices in work and employment for people of determination. He noted that "inclusion and diversity are increasingly the focus of social and economic issues," urging everyone to contribute to an inclusive society where "everyone matters."

In this session, Dr. Pauliina Lampinen from Finland introduced the RATKO model for hiring candidates from people of determination based on company needs. Dr. Heidie Kershaw from Global Autism Coalition highlighted appreciating neurodiverse individuals, stating that "a different way of thinking is actually an advantage."

Accessibility and Leisure Enhancements

A session titled ‘Accessibility and Rehabilitation Impact on Participation for All’ was chaired by Jan Johansen and Lucia Lasaga. Dania Al-Adhami from Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination and Aaesha Al Shehyari from Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism discussed enhancing leisure for all through assistive technologies in hotels.

Their discussion focused on integrating technologies to address physical, auditory, and visual needs within the tourism industry. This approach aims to empower accessibility by improving leisure experiences for people of determination.

The congress underscored various practices within professional industries that can help special needs communities contribute economically. It highlighted how these practices support their participation in both local economies and broader global contexts.
